My 1992 325is inside cabin fan will not operate on switch settings 1 and 2 but WILL run on setting 3. How do I fix? Is this a bad switch? Bad relay? Bad pack? I am not electrically astute but am tired of being taken by the local stealership. How do I access what is broke? Any help appreciated:screwy:

probably bad switch. If you pull all the knobs off there should be two screws too take out and the face should pull right off. If not there is a couple small clips around the edges. Once you have the face off you should see the little clips that hold the rear part in and its easy from there.
good luck

You will want to look at the fan resistor pack. It was the culprit on my 1991, and the typical symptom is just as you describe. I don't know where it is located on the E36. (on the E30 it is mounted on the blower motor)

he's right, that slipped my mind, and I also don't know where they are on the e36 but on most cars I've worked on they are on or very close to the blower

Alot of times you don't even have to replace the resistor pack, you can just clean it up a bit with some denatured alcohol and put it back in. Good luck.
