What I did one time is connect the speaker outs to another stereo amplifier and connected that to a subwoofer. For the outputs on that amplifier, I tied the Rights and Lefts together to get Mono for the subwoofer. You basically keep the main speakers connected to your stereo while using a second amplifier to power the sub. It could be a piece of shit stereo from a garage sale. I used an old RCA and got plenty of bass to my sub.

Ok, first off you need an enclosure for the sub, and amp for it, and a crossover.

A crossover splits up the frequencys so the subwoofer only sees what it can play, normally 15-80ish hertz. You need the amp to power the subwoofer.

They make amps called "Plate amps" that are specifically for home theater sub duty and have a crossover built into them.

You also need an enclosure for the sub, whether it be sealed or ported.

So if you want to do this you would take the wires from the stereo into the high level inputs on the plate amp. The plate amp mounts in the box for the sub and is wired to the sub in whatever config you desire (make sure to stay in the rated specs). Set the crossover settings to the desired settings and there you have some more lowend.

balls ... I think you're missing his point. I doubt he wants to BUY anything, just hook up what he has. Some amps will let you do that (called trimode), some amps won't. If you try it and fail, it may blow the amp up - good luck.
