3.1 Swap To 3.8?

I have a 1996 Monte Carlo v6 with a 3100 any chance to switch to a 3800? will it fit? does the tranny need to be changed? and what about computer chips? any idea of the cost to do this?

since the 96 had 3.8s in them it would bolt right on but I would change the computer because bigger engine so timing and fuel mix will be different

The Monte didn't come with a 3800 until they changed the body style in 2000. The engine cradle in your car will not accept a 3800 without extensive modifications, so this swap isn't feasable. Anything CAN be done with enough money and patience, but the result wouldn't be worth the effort in this case.

Richtazz, not to question your expertise, but weren't 3.8's in the 1998 Z34's?

Good point.. bottom line of the thread, itd be cheaper to buy a newer Monte with the 3.8.
