AT leak, shift shaft seal

Hi group, I just bought this 96 geo tracker 2 door convertible 4x4 with auto transmission. It has a trans oil leak and a mechanic told me it needs a shift shaft seal. Anyone know how big a deal that is on this car? I just got the car two days ago (102,000 miles on it) and have a lot to learn about it. Thanks for any info, Ed
