95 Grand AM SE, over heating

Sup everyone. I'm having problems with my 95 Grand AM SE 6 cylinder over heating. It has about 164,900 miles. I've kept up w/ oil changes regularly, with Mobile 1. Before, I noticed the temp guage would rise some when sitting @ a stop light, but it would then go down once I got moving pretty well. Now the gauge was boarder line red while on the highway. I have yet to see any smoke or steam, though when I got home I did notice a slight smell. I checked the oil and antifreeze and both seemed to be up to par. My dad said it could be a thermastat/ gasket issue? I'm just curious if anyone else had some other ideas to throw out there about the possible issues. Thanks in advance, Brandon.

you should read my post....I had the same issue. After $700.00 dollars later I come to find out i had some air pockets in my system. Check that first! :2cents:

Doubt air would just pop in there, but thats something easy to fix.
If theirs no air in the coolant system, change the thermostat, buy a good one they are cheap also.

Check around/under the Throtle body, the V6s like to leak there(lower intake) and its kinda hard to see.

My 3.4 V6 was leaking under the TB recently, which was the lower intake. Eventually it was blowing oil into the coolant, and I replaced all the gaskets from the heads up, just to play it safe.

I talked to my dad. He said the intake and valve cover gaskets were replaces @ around 114k miles. Also @ the same time, the engine was flushed, cooling system was flushed, and the tranny was flushed. I went ahead and got the thermastat, b/c i dont think its been changed since i've had the car.Should I make it a point of letting the mechanic know about the possible simple fixes? Mainly b/c i dont have 700$ to drop down to fix this car. Oh my dad also said it could be the fan clutch in the radiator. Anywho To sum up, I dont wanna get hit w/ a heavy bill to fix an easy problem. Thanks again, Brandon. Oh, and I'll keep ya posted oh how it goes.
