ac comp cause engine probs?

Ok I must apologize as my car is an 88Olds Royal and not a 98

My friend said there were bearings...hmm...maybe he does not know a whole lot more than me...
the engine light does come on...the trouble code that did come up at Auto Zone parts store was spark plug problems...but then the guy said it sounded like a bad bearing or something worse... as if he thought I would need a new engine as well...then he sold me some kind of oil conditioner...the oil is dark and needs to be changed...my friend said he thinks he sees some grit in it confirming something grinding inside...he also thinks part(s) are not getting oil to them as we can hear some clacking inside after the car has been driven and heats up. I guess his explanation of bearing means something relating to the piston and drive shaft?

edit above
1996 old 98 ac comp. went bad; could this cause belt to lose its effect on other engine components; causing what would seem to be bad gas probs; sounds like bad engine bearing; stall out when backing; not wanting to turn over; then...on a hot day seems to be running fine; which may be after ac comp. is now allowing belt to turn even though ac comp. not funtional.

I am trying to determine if I have a bad bearing in engine; which is what someone thought it was. I either want to get rid of the car or fix a simple problem. So why fix the ac comp if its an engine bearing; you know?

Umm...I'm not sure if "engine bearings" exist. I would say that if you do have a bad AC compressor, that it may have started to sieze. You should be able to order a new serpentine belt that bypasses the AC.

The stalling while backing out and other issues you described could be caused by a lot of other items (assuming they are still present after you get a different belt). Are there any trouble codes, i.e. is the check engine light on?

Bearing... What about a bad rod or piston? Either of those would spell death for a car of this age, unless otherwise it is in immaculate condition to merit essentially rebuilding the motor...or replacing it with series 2 SC :)

A bad timing chain damper could eat up a timing chain and cause metal shavings in the oil. If this is the case, then it would a [comparatively] easy fix. On the GM 3800 series 1, the Timing chain only lasts 75-125k miles or so.

How many miles? Has the timing chain ever been replaced? When was the last time the oil was changed?

I'm going to post this back in your thread so others can see it too to help with more troubleshooting.

On a side note, an old, stretched timing chain can cause an engine to backfire and stumble...and overall lack of power.

What is a series 2 SC ?

What is and when used was a series 1 ?

thanks
