I brought a 2005 (Brand new) chevy silverado extended cab, standard bed, 4x4. Im not sure which package it is, but its pretty basic (its my work truck). No power windows or power locks, no carpet. I was told by the dealership that it had the 5.3 V-8 in it. After looking on msn and a couple other sites, it doesnt show the 5.3 as a option. The motor doesnt say anything on it besides VORTEX. I believe the 4.8 is also a vortex. There is a sticker for the belt routing and it has illustrations for both 4.8 and 5.3 engines. Does anyone have any ways of verifying which motor i may have. Im currently in Guam right now so i cant look at the VIN number or anything. Im new to the chevy trucks also. I usually drive Fords, but like chevy equally. Thanks for the help.

I know there's a way to tell by letters in the VIN, but I don't know which is which.

:evillol:
1. Take the engine apart.
2. Measure the diameter of the bore of the cylinders and calculate the area of the circle.
3. Turn the crank and measure the stroke.
4. Multiply.

Well, if your worried it is a v6, you can always count the plugs. As far as the 4.8/5.3, go the VIN route.

Mine shows it on top of the metal frame before the radiator. So when you open the hood it is right there, you can't miss it

OK, sorry.. I was just pointing out that he can not get to any part of the truck at the moment as he stated. I thought you might have overlooked that when you posted your reply. You did give a good answer for when he gets home. Sorry for the confusion..

Oh, wait, now I'm confused:eek:. If he does not have the truck with him in Guam, then there is pretty much no way he can find this out unless he has the paperwork with him from the purchase. I mean, with all these recommendations, you have to be able to look at the truck itself.

Well I would still have some hope that is has the 5.3 like the dealership says. I have a truck just like yours, an 05 with very few options. No power anything and rubber floors. Only options it has are skid plates, heavy duty suspension, tint, light duty power package, upgraded seats and 4.10s. My truck has the all aluminum 5.3 in it.

I also forgot to mention that I bought my truck new and did a lot of searching beforehand. If I remember correctly every extended cab standard box 4x4 that I saw had the all aluminum 5.3L in it. This was in Michigan, in your area maybe it was different.
