Its very interesting that this pic looks very much like its pieced together from 2...

http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1%20GTR/Ueno_large.jpg

and this one is almost identical to the scan that i made a while back. Some of the dust on my pic is in the same place as their pic

This is not an LM - looks like GTR #11R to me.

http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1%20LM/DSCN0073_s.jpg (http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1%20LM/DSCN0073.jpg)

The filename on this shot is "ueno-rear_large.jpg" but I think it's really an image of the Cesar GTR that wore race number #42 at the 1995 24Hrs of LeMans.

http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1%20GTR/ueno-rear_thumb.jpg (http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1%20GTR/ueno-rear_large.jpg)

Also, I'm fairly certain this is not an F1 GT. There's no roof scoop, no louvers on the fender, the mirror extensions are missing, and the upper engine cover shouldn't have glass through to the interior. I'm pretty certain this is actually XP5.

http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1GT/F1-GT-Duotone_thumb.jpg (http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/images/cars/F1GT/F1-GT-Duotone_Large.jpg)

A quick skimming of the text showed they're still claiming 100 cars produced and that all 5 LMs were painted orange. Oh well... :uhoh:

It did say that McLaren still owns one of the GTs, so maybe 56XPGT is still hiding around there somewhere.

i agree, Chassis #005R it is, the racing #42 is in the right place, and as its filename is ueno, should make it '95 era Le Mans, and the '95 Le Mans #42 was chassis #005R

i'm with you too on this point; no roof scoop, no raised louvres on the front wings, no NACA duct on the rear glass works too make this not a GT. Didnt realise anything was amiss with the mirror, but i dont look too hard for that sort of thing (:iceslolan )

Note how the side mirrors are extended from the bodywork to see around the rear wing in this shot of 56XPGT:

NO. I just think its cool that they used my scans instead of using their own press pics. It also means there could be McLaren guys lurking here. I thought the "quite cool if you ask me" part would get the point across. I guess not.

Well, you can not expect to much from McLaren, After all, the car has been out of production for some years now. So it is strange that they have dedicated this much effort to the web site after all these years.(High tec company, Low tec web site) At least you would think, they would get all the details correct. Should have consulted some of the key people on this site!!

But something is better than nothing!!

Some nice pics:thumbsup:

Agreed on all points.

I think they are quite proud of the history of the F1 though, and were not so happy with the look of the original F1 website or the fact that it didn't flow with the format of their new ones.

I think those two LM shots predate even Mr Selldorff's ownership of LM3. There are a pair of stickers in the windshield that match what was there when Morrison owned the car, but weren't there when Selldorff had the car. Also there were a pair of gauges installed in LM3 when Selldorff had it that should be visible to the left of the e-brake handle that don't seem to be there when looking at the other interior shot. I suppose those could have been removed, but the stickers seem to be the real clincher in my mind.

EDIT: My assumptions are confirmed. The photos of the LM interior were taken for an article in McLaren's "RacingLine" magazine in 1999 titled "THE HOTTEST SEAT IN THE WEST". Rather interestingly, in the article (which was written following LM3s participation the 1999 Gumball Rally) Morrison claims that he'll probably keep the car forever.

I may have been attempting to draw a parallel there. ;)

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that after registering for their new site and running through every section I could find that I am really impressed with the effort and the amount of content they managed to include. There are some real treasures hiding inside the Community section, so signing up is a must.

One thing in particular that really put a smile on my face is a 18 minute version of video with XP5 setting the top speed record at Ehra Lessien in 1998. It features three full laps of the 10 mile track with commentary from Andy Wallace along the way. I don't think I'm the only person here who gets excited when they hear his words "On the banking at the far end..." so be sure to check that out.

There's also a 7:30 video I've never seen of XP5 setting a ciruit record at MIRA with Peter Taylor at the wheel. He manages to average ~170mph around the 2.8 mile outer circuit there, breaking the record previously set by the Jaguar XJR-13 (a true racing car). The track is damp, there are three steeply banked turns and it's thrilling to watch.

There are even some super-hires F1 shots in the Gallery under "Downloads" including one shot of #075 I've never seen before, and another I've only seen at 450x334 of it sitting diagonal in front of the Hawk jet. I think both images are much nicer than the one they chose to include on the "Driving Ambition" poster.

The only downside to all of this new stuff is that over the weekend I just finished syncing up the three locations I keep my F1 content so they were all identical for the first time in history, and now I have another ~120 or so items to add. It's a never ending battle, but I guess I'm not really complaining. :grinno:

450x334 was the size of the one image which I've had since 8/05/2003. It was all crappy and washed out though. I have both the hires ones now. :)

I pieced that together from one of the RacingLine PDFs which took quite a bit of effort. I can see all the mistakes, but I still think it turned out quite well considering the large gap that separated the two pages.

Here's another sweet shot from one of the articles that I pieced together too:

Did anyone see that team mclaren members can get tours of the MTC? I'm thinking about joining just for that...

Yes. It's not a new thing - they've had the program for almost as long as they've been printing RacingLine magazine as I believe that's one of the things that's included in the package.

I would suggest the key word on that link is "chance" Its either a hidiously long waiting list or you have to win the tour in a competition. If you are interested (and have a morning free) go to Genesis. Since I went there last year Ive been told they still service the F1s there. (You may be more lucky than me. I only saw SLRs. :( Plus they have the Prototype shop there.

I know many of you dont like the SLR, but its certainly got road presence.

Hi, I'm newbie here, but have been a Mclaren F1 fan for a long time... I've noticed that Driving Ambition is available on mclarenautomotive.com and was wondering if I should get if from them or from amazon uk (which apparently is available 'new' there)... while its a bit more expensive from Mclaren, theres a sense of authenticity from getting it directly from Mclaren... ultimately do you guys know if its essentially the same book?

I'm looking to get the Standard Edition. Thanks people...

Peloton25
07-13-2006, 01:37 PM
I'd be quite surprised if the Standard Edition that McLaren is offering was any different, so unless you place a high value on having a return address label with McLaren on it, I'm thinking you will be much better off getting the standard edition through another source. They might even be shipping it through a third-party source, so you might not even get your "McLaren" label. I would bet that a place like Amazon would have it in your hands much quicker too since that's what they do.

Welcome to the forum - enjoy your stay. :)
