Yesterday we tried to put a new tranny in my 4dr dx but couldnt get the axle nuts off. we tried air tools, heat, breaker bars, u name it. Any other ideas out there that may work better?

Heat didn't work? Did you get it red? That's how I got mine off. I aimed the propane torch at the nut, came back in 5 mins, used a 3/4 drive ratchet, not a breaker bar becuase they flex, and about a 5 foot cheater bar. It came off.

Heat and air tools are about the only way to go. I don't know about heating it up for 5 minutes though, seems a little much :p If you can't get it off, you might want to try pulling the axle out of the tranny and moving it out of the waywhile you pull that out and get the new one it. My friend and I had to do that with an Accord once, but that was because we didn't have the right socket to get that nut off and wanted to get it done that night.

Yea, becuase the nut and axle are different metals / the nut is thinner, it will heat up faster. Get it where it's starting to turn white-ish and it will twist right off. Then let it cool on it's own. If you throw it in water, it will become extremly brittle.

no I agree that heating it up to where it's red hot is a good idea, I just think the 5 minutes is a little excessive; shouldn't take that long.

Had the same problem when we were swapping the LS into our CRX... 6' breaker bar, 1/2" drive, and 21mm socket... Popped off with three of us pulling on it, it was seriously on there, haha.
