Help with "new" old car

I am getting a 1983 Maxima, and the current owner says that it needs shocks/struts. Anyone know how much it will cost for these and what it entails to put them in? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

hmm, depends, is it running thestock shocks now? I believe the OEM one cost alot more than if you went with some aftermarket...what made you decide to get an 83 maxima? and how much are you paying? heh

I believe it's all stock. The thing that made me decide to get an '83 Maxima is the price. I'm getting it for $50.00

ahh, nice price hehe 300+ thousand miles? :) I would contact nissan parts dept at a local dealership and get a price for new struts and springs, then maybe call like an Autozone and get a price from them, then look into aftermarket stuff, unless you know you want to drop it down a bit then just aftermarket parts for the shocks

Yeah, I can't pass up the price. The interior is shot, but redoing an interior is a fun project. Actually it has about 120K miles :) Hey, my '86 Chevy Caprice has 250K and still going strong. I checked at Autozone and they are about $25 for the front and another $25 for the rear. My only problem is that I have no idea how to change out struts. I have heard that labor on struts is astronomically high, so I figured I would get some help on how to do it myself. Once a cheapskate, always a cheapskate. :)

Go to the libary and see if they have a chiltons manual for an 83 max, check out the book and viola, you have the instructions you need. I can type out basic instructions here, but having a book in front of you would be much easier, plus you need to know all the correct torques. ;)

All I really need is the basics so I know what I will be getting myself into before I buy it. It will be coming with the above mentioned Chilton manual, so I'm cool there, but until I actually buy it I won't have it to look at. I was told that you can't just unbolt struts and bolt the new ones on, so what does it take to do the job? Thanks!
