I have a 1995 Eagle Talon. It is a Non-turbo automatic with 140,000 miles on it. For about 2 weeks or so the car would randomly shut off. It would shut off here and there, sometimes frequently sometimes not. It would shut off at stop lights and when i tried to start it again it would start. It would shut off on the expressway doing about 60-65 and immediately turn back on by itself.
Well one night it decided to shut off when i came to a stop. It would not start this time. I tried and tried but it just wouldnt turn over. Then i had my girlfriends mom come try and steer it while i pushed it and she actually got it to start maybe 2 or 3 times but it would shut back off immediately.
So me and my brother tinkered around with it and when we checked the fuses with a test light, he took out the fuse for the motor and put it back in and then the car ran fine again. I took about a 16 mile trip and it ran fine up until i got to where i needed to go. Then it started doing the random shut-off and starting right back up when i tried. Well another 16 miles home and it was still doing it. So when i left for work, it shut off again at a light and wouldnt start up. I messed with the fuse again a couple times and it would start up and then shut back off before i could even close the hood and get back in the car. :banghead:
So we thought it was the ECU. Well my dad took the ECU out and then put it back in the other day and now it seems to be running absolutely perfect just like it did a month ago.
I need help. I dont want to spend the money on a new ECU if i dont have to. What do you think the problem could be? I tried to be as detailed as i could.
1995 Eagle Talon 2.0 Non-Turbo
Already Tried:
New fuses, New Fuel pump.

Sounds like the exact same problems I had when my ECU went bad, random shut offs and startups at various speeds. Replace the ECU and be done with it.

I'll have to agree with gthompson. You can always buy a new one or get a working used one, and if it dosn't fix the problem you can re-sell it for close to what you paid.
On a side note, I want to applaude (sp?) you on your post. Seeing as it was your first, and it rarely happens that newbs post that much info. that clearly the first time. Thanks.

I had the EXACT same symptoms when my CAS failed. This was on a turbo 2g with 6 bolt swap, but I'm sure the NTs are setup similarly in this way. The turbo ECU won't fire the injectors or sparkplugs, or even turn on the fuel pump, if it does not see a CAS signal. Could still be the ECU of course, this is just one more thing that is a common cause for what you are seeing.
And I agree, well done on your first post. Not only written well as far as grammar and spelling, but a good layout of what you are seeing, what you have tried, etc. It's a rare thing these days...
Good luck.
