Engine Smokes and makes weird noise

My 93 Ford Explorer starts just fine, and it runs just fine until it warms up. When it warms up, everytime I push on the accelerator, it makes a noise that sounds like a bunch of pennies rattling around in an empty pop can, and it eventually dies. I've very recently replaced the fuel filter. Today I started it and just let idle, and then when it warmed up, I noticed that the engine was smoking. Its not low on oil. I have no clue what is wrong with it, HELP!!!

Are you using a lot of coolant? Has the oil level changed? When was you last tune-up? Where's it smoking from? What do the spark plugs look like?

Sounds like spark knock to me. The 4.0 is pretty well known for the egr vacum sensor going out. Just replaced it on two explorers. It will eventually turn on the check enginge light. Easy to get to, and replace for about $65.00.
