How to pick a 1.5 Gen...

Hey guys,
I've come over to pick your brains again.
There is a sweet 94 TT for sale atm that is underpriced by about $9000! Yes I did mean to type $9000. :iceslolan
Its stock standard except for an exhaust. The only known problems are that the 2nd gear syncro is on its way out as it crunches 2nd gear.
What the clincher will be if I buy it is if it is indeed one of the 1.5gen models. Ie if it has the 2nd gen running gear in the 1st gen shell.
My question is: How can I tell if it has 2nd gen running gear by photo alone? Or what can I ask the guy to look for an tell me? He lives over the other side of Australia so it makes it a little hard to jump over there and check myself.
Thanks in advance! :smokin:

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but there is a very famous scam by someone who is trying to sell a vr4 for cheap, and when you get to talking to them, they request you to send a downpayment or something to them so they can get it shipped out to you. I would be careful if this is the new wave of this scam. Just be cautious.
Secondly, I have no reason in the world to believe anyone with 1/2 a brain would take out the 6 speed tranny and replace it with a 1st gen tranny (2nd gen is 6 speed, 1st gen is 5 speed). The 6 speed is stronger due to the xfer case. I've never heard of anyone here or on 3si doing that. I've heard of people trading out their 5 speeds and putting in MR gearing, but that's different.
The easy way to tell if a car is a 1st gen or a 2nd gen is to look at the front end. If the head lights are "pop-up" type, then it's a 1st gen. If they aren't "pop-up" then it's a 2nd gen. HOWEVER...it's possible to trade out the front end and get rid of the pop up headlights and to switch it over to the non pop-up, so that's something you want to check for as well.
Before you jump on this or anything, I would get the VIN for the vehicle. You can paste the VIN into www.carfax.com and it will tell you the year of the vehicle. Another easy way to check is to look at the 10th digit of the VIN. The 10th digit will tell you the year of the vehicle. example: M is 1991, N is 1992, P is 1993, etc etc...
Anyways, good luck on everything.

Ok I jut checked that link for the pictures of the car. Since it's a 5 speed, AND it's got pop-up headlights. I bet that car is a 1993. I would almost bet $20 that if you get the VIN for the car, then 10th digit is a P (1993). If it's NOT either an M, N, or P, I would most likely stay away from the car, as the guy is possibly tryinig to screw you. However, there is a chance they are just stupid and don't know the correct year of the car...

Hahahaha,
Thanks for the warning Gateway but i'm pretty sure this one is legit. I have been watching this GTO for months now and watched the price slowly drop bi by bit. The market has completely dropped out of the Australian performance car market so everyone is selling dirt cheap at the moment. An I have sent an email to the guy and he told me that I should come around and see it for myself. I think he is legit enough.
I know how to tell if its a 1st gen or a 2nd gen, Im not that stupid. :icon16: What I wanted to know, was if it was a 1.5 gen as in the 2nd gen goodies in a 1st gen body. The 4 bolt main, 25 splite tranny, forged, crankshaft etc etc... All in the 1st gen shell. So I get the performance and reliability of the 2nd gens but the looks of the 1st gens.
Thanks for the info on the VIN numbers too. Does that apply to the Japanese cars too? Or is that a US thing only?

Those arent all the 2nd gen goodies. Your missing the bigger brakes, the 6 speed and some smaller stuff. But I guess you could call the 93 a 1.5 gen.

Yaggus, what's confusing to us is that we've never heard the term "1.5 gen." but we do know what you're referring to. in the 93 VR4s, they received the 25 spline OS, forged internals (tho i think all VR4s have forged internals, regardless of years), and the 4 bolt main. but as talskinyguy said, the 93 model VR4 still lacks the bigger brakes, 6spd, and various other goodies of the 2nd gens.
but as you say, if you like the pop-ups, then the 93 year is the one to get, b/c of the the 25 spline OS and 4 bolt main.
good luck with it. let us know how it goes.
OH, does the front bumper have turn signals like the pic of the car in my avatar? how bout some pics of the car ur looking at?

he has a link to the pics in his 2nd post.
also, i think he is saying that, in australia, 1994 model year cars can still have the "first gen body" but have everything else from a 2nd gen(exept 6spd and brakes)...so a 1994 there is basically a 1993 here...? becasue the ad definitely says 1994 and its a gen 1 body.

Yeah its a 94 car but still a 1st gen shell. What can happen sometimes is that it could be built in 93 but brought over and complied in 1994 so it gets called a 94:screwy: Stupid and confusing I know.
I emailed the guy asking for some more details but I havent got a reply yet. If I dont get it then I wont be that cut. Ill just buy another GT4 until the compliance for MR GTOs goes through and I can get one of those in. :iceslolan
If I get the 94, yay I'll have a GTO again. If I dont, oh well, ill buy a different car. Thanks for all the help so far guys.
