Fail...
No spark at all now. WTF... :(
Fuel line is leaking, oil pan is leaking, coolant line is leaking... Oh and did I mention I have a mess of wires under the dash? This is one of those nights where I hate this thing... :banghead:

Can't figure out why there is no spark... Everything is good. Even checked the harness from the motor to the ECU for possible cuts or wires pulled out of connectors... Nothing...
Something interesting this time around though... I was poking around under the dash by the ECU for wires and I heard something click. I looked up on the dash and there was the security light lit up a bright green. I've NEVER seen that light as long as I've owned the car. I'm wondering if this could be attributing to the "no spark" problem...
Ideas? Thoughts?
I just want this f*cker to run!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Im not too familiar with the security systems on our cars. But Ive experienced that most other cars, if the security light is on, the car wont start.

Wish that was the case for my buddy's Pontiac Grand Prix. Had 6 warning lights on and car still ran. Just blew the headgasket on Wednesday haha. Dumbass

My old 1995 GST, had one. I found it when I changed the doors, and broke the little wire that tells the alarm to turn off when you unlock it. Anyways, my alarm went off, and I had the green light on my dash.

So if the light was on and that alarm was going off, the car ideally should not start.

Your right, I could not get it to start when the alarm was going off, I had to unhook the batter to reset the ECU.

Can't you just put the key in the door and turn the key to unlock, that should deactivate any alarm.

That might work for him. But it couldn't work for my old GST, because I broke the wire that connected to the door that sent the feed to the alarm saying that it was shut off.

Yes, the security light is the green one you guys are talking about... I have no idea how it would have gotten set off though. I unhooked the battery before I left the other day... Maybe the ECU has reset by now, but I still need to figure out what is setting it off cause it's killin me here on starting this bastard...
Perhaps a way to unhook it entirely from the ECU as I don't even need it? I just would like to keep my factory keyless entry. I read the entire pin out for the ECU but don't know where it would be running into the ECU unless it is actually a component on the board itself...
On a side note, I am without internet at home so it has been impossible for me to research this problem at all. :(

The galant gsx was. I sold it and the kid after me blew it up. I miss that car :(, however the vr4 is not. I should be picking it up Wednesday. Sux about the fluids and green light. It runs and does not leak. I just need a tune and licensing and I'm good!

First off, in my defense of time... I was a total noob when I started this project and you older guys knew that. It was all I could do to barely change my oil, but now look at where I am, what I know, and what I can do...
Anywho...
Good news, bad news, and sad news...
Good news... It runs...
Bad news... Cylinder 3 is f*cked
Sad news... I didn't even get to see it run today... :(
My two buddies were working on it today since I'm on Midnights for a while and sleeping during the day and they pulled out the whole wiring harness. Upon doing this they discovered another plug that had fallen down behind my motor that matched the same plug for the coil and the cam angle sensor to crank sensor plug for the 6 bolt in a 2g swap. I had tried switching the plugs around a few times thinking I hooked them up wrong but I didn't know this extra one had fallen behind the motor. They traced everything with a wiring diagram and plugged in everything by the book and got it running...
However, Drew (My buddy with the black GSX that was working on this today) called me and said cylinder 3 doesn't have good compression or something cause its missing bad. So Tuesday when I'm off work I plan on doing a compression test to see whats going on there... I am wondering if there is a problem with one of the valves not seating correctly, head gasket got f'd up or even worse, dare I say... A valve got hit on installation? I hope not but only time will tell... At least it runs! Too bad I was sleeping and didn't get to see it... :(

Well I went over and started it yesterday. It'll idle, but it's really rough. I'm going to explore a few options before tearing anything major apart yet. I wasn't able to do the compression test because I didn't have a long enough adapter to get clear down in there to thread it in. Stupid DSMs... I went all over creation yesterday looking for one with no luck. Gonna go try to find one again today so I can find out my compression for all these cylinders... I'm hoping its just something retarded instead... Like a vacuum leak...

So I have a funny story about the compression tester I rented... Long story, short. There's no way they'll take it back and give me my money back so I'm not even gonna try. Tried to make a slight modification to things and we had a little boo boo with the hose connector getting destroyed and then the hose melting... Anywho, had to make a new one and now it's pretty sweet...
So the compression test turned out weird. Only had 110psi on all cylinders. Found that cylinder 3 didn't have combustion for an unknown reason. Soon after that found that cylinders 2 and 3 were no longer firing. Soon after that found that the coil for both those cylinders had died on me. Replaced it with another coil and then they were firing again. Gave it a crank and the car ran... Sounded really good but something didn't sound quite right and we had some smoke/steam going on slightly behind the motor... Oh joy, what the f*ck could it be now... Oh look, where did all my coolant go? Coolant and oil mixed together? Sweet... I get to pull the head again just for a f*cking head gasket after all that? F*cking great... I hate... these motherf*cking cars...
I had a MLS gasket though. I thought those bastards were impossible to blow out? Ordering a new one tomorrow I guess... Also considering going with coil on plug and an MSD ignition now too rather than shelling out stupid money for a new coil pack. Thoughts?

If it does go then I'll be getting my own house here guys, so don't look at it as a loss but as an upgrade... Just gotta prioritize sometimes. I can't live at home forever. lol

Hey man, I dont blame you at all for that, if you can get what you want out of it, then the smart thing to do would be to sell.
But anyways. How could a brand new HG be blown? The head is freshly surfaced, and I'm sure you tourqed it to spec.......Doesnt seem right.

I remember a friend of mine having a headgasket issue when he had his car, right after a rebuild. Turns out he had set the head on the gasket, then adjusted it, causing the head/block/gasket to rub, which caused a small tear in the gasket (can't remember if it was MLS or copper ? ) and he had to replace it right away cuz he was loosing oil fast. Pretty sure it was even in the GVR4 i bought, lol.
Who'd have thought you'd start building a car and end up w/ a house?!

So I spent the entire day working on the car. Tore the head off and found out what caused the head gasket issue... The head studs were loose in the block!! No clue how that happened. I never even gave it a thought to check that the last time the head was off, but somehow they were really loose. The head gasket had coolant and oil mixed all over the place and I had a mess on the pistons too. I'm really thinking the gasket was good but got a new MLS one anyways and put it on there. Tightened up my head studs in the block and got everything back together... Can't believe how much I was able to accomplish today in a 9 hour period... Now I am waiting on my coil on plug to show up so I can put it on and start the car!! :)

I dont know too much about headstuds (havent used any yet). Just for my own knowledge, for future use, don't you install them into the block finger tight?
SilvrEclipse
09-20-2009, 11:31 AM
Yes you install the studs finger tight but you torque the nuts down, Im assuming the nuts were loose
Blackcrow64
09-21-2009, 12:01 AM
No the nuts were tight and bottomed out on the threads but the actual studs were not finger tight into the block. They were out of it like 1/8"... Big fail on my part for not checking it in the first place... Today I went and finished hooking everything up and tried firing it up for the heck of it on the old coil pack and such and still no firing on cylinders 2 and 3. I had swapped the one coil for a crap one off a 1g just to test it and got it firing but now its not firing again. I think it might have something to do with the wiring job I did on the coil pack setup I had made. Oh well, it was only temporary anyways till I decided to shell out the cash for coil on plug. I can't wait till it gets here and I can fire this beast up! Probably will be this coming weekend when I start it...

Damn I was hoping to have mine done before Brians but looks like maybe not. Hope that gets running soon!

Coil on plug is here and it's one of the nicest ones I've ever seen for the price I paid... Only downfall is that the one clip was damaged in shipping and needs fixed so it doesn't come unplugged from the coil. Emailed the guy and he is sending me a new clip in the morning so I can repair it myself. So by next week this beast should be on the road!... If not... Oh boy... I donno...

Well I got the Coil on plug on the car tonight and it certainly fixed the firing issue that I had due to the dead coilpack... However... My power steering pump blew up tonight and is spraying out around the pulley... Meh... Gotta get a new one. For now I just took the belt off that. Who needs power steering anyways right?...
Now onto my next issue. Idle... The thing will not idle on it's own at all. Give it a hair bit of gas and it idles perfect. Messed with the TPS, BISS, MAFT and none of them fixed it... Of course I also hear a major vacuum leak around the TB or Intake manifold but can't find a leak anywhere! It drove me crazy and I know that has to be what's jackin up my idle. Once I get that fixed the thing will start up and go with no problems. Sucks that it's getting colder outside and not helping working on the car... Blah...
Thoughts on what could be leaking? All my gaskets are good everywhere too. I'm gonna do a boost leak test on my day off next week and hopefully find it. Key word here is hopefully... I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions on what else I could try.

hmm my bet is it is an unattached vaccuum hose that runs from the TB. It could be the one to the FPR, or one of them that goes from the Intake manifold. I would check all those nipples first. If you have a stethescope you can listen around in areas that works well.
