No Air Conditioning

I have a friend with a 1997 Ford Escort on which the Air Conditioning has stopped working. The compressor clutch isn't engaging. The R-134 pressure is about 125 psi, the clutch fuse is OK (replaced with known good fuse) and I used a short jumper wire to bypass the low pressure switch.

Any help appreciated!

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 1997 Escort that might assist me in figuring out why the A/C compressor isn't engaging?

how about the a/c relay

The relay is next on my list of suspects....ergo the wiring diagram so I know what goes into it, where it is, etc.... Thanks for the suggestion.

I believe the AC relay is in the fuse box near the battery.... it is labeled pretty well. Could be a bad cycling switch too... follow your AC lines up near the passenger side firewall to find it.
Sorry... no diagram for you, but you should find what you need in a Haynes manual... any AutoZone type store should have one for less than $20.

Thanks for the suggestion. I jumpered the cycling switch connector, no help. I'm guessing the cycling switch is open with low pressure, closed at higher pressures.

I would suggest you NOT leave a jumper on any connection ... very easy to wipe out a compressor.

Have you tried checking for voltage at the compressor clutch connector? The clutch itself may be open.

Does your trim level have the on-off ac switch with light on the control panel? Does the radiator fan turn on (high speed) when this switch is turned "on" (with key in "on" position)?

BTW: The pressure of 125 psi that you read is the pressure throughout the system ... i.e, since the compressor isn't working you have 125 psi evenly around the whole system. ... and, assuming the system has only R134a in it (and not some significant level of contaminants) it means the refrigerant is approx 100 deg F. The bottom line ... it almost means nothing except, hopefully, it has some pure R134a in it .... you may still not have enough.
