o2 Sensor??? I'm not sure....

I was driving a friend of mine around last night, and as I was accelerating, my car cut out!! Weird, I thought..... because this has never happened in the 2 years I've owned it. So, starting the car, we moved out, and it cut out again!!! WTF!! I noticed that it cut out as the tach reached 2500rpm and if I sat in P or N ('92 SE Auto) and stomped on the gas, it'd run like crap once it reached that rpm and cut out after I released the gas.

Could this be the o2 sensor, or should I start looking elsewhere? I just changed all of my injectors, so I've ruled that out. Plus, I've gotten new plugs and fuel filter, as well. I'm kinda at a loss, since this was intermittent, and ran fine after I sat for a few minutes. Thoughts anyone???:thinkerg:

when was the last time you changed the air filter ?

I had an RX-7 with over 260k miles and the stock O2 sensors where still great, and those suckers do a lot more work than in a Maxima.

I think they changed it when I got my oil change, but I can easily check it out. Would THAT cause the car to just cut out? It's almost as if someone shut the car off.....

yes and also check the AFM(plugged in) that it is attached to, no loose connections. Also did your check engine light come on, if it did you will need to pull out the code and if it was something serious your car is in "limp" mode.

Well, I checked the filter, and it was clean and looked pretty new, so I'm assuming that they changed it when they did my service. As for the "check engine" light, nothing came on at the time this happened. I still don't have a clue.

well, don't know if it is the O2 sensor or not, guess you'll have to take it to a mechanic to have it looked at.

I just got back from the mechanic...... Turns out that it wasn't the o2 sensor, after all! But that was the GOOD news. Instead, it's the MAF sensor! Almost $600 from Nissan and local salvages don't even have that unless I buy the entire engine! What da **** is that about?? OUCH!! I'll figure out something, I hope.

I WAS thinking that it was the AFM (they usually do NOT go bad). It looks like the place where you took it did a "switch a roo" got your good sensor and replaced it with the one on your car now. Check the junkyards, almost all the nissans like pathfinders have the SAME exact sensor, so just look for junkyards with Nissans, should be about $50.00

I've got the same car and last week had the exact same problem. My mechanic can't find a fault - can I ask what a MAF sensor is and what it does and where it's located?

Sure. The MAF (mass air flow) sensor measures the amount of air going into your engine. I did a little research after hearing about this problem. On MY car (VE30DE), the sensor is the small, square box that's located between the throttle body and the air filter. It should be bolted on by 4 screws, if I'm not mistaken.

I appreciate the help. Did this happen only the once and the car was then un-drivable? or would the car start to run 'normally' for a while and then it would act up again?

I've replaced the throttle position sensor ($50.00) and the car has not stalled but last week when my wife was driving the engines idle was off - similar to what you describe.
