1of 3 jobs on the table right now.

This is my concept sketch.

Clients reviewing.

It's rough but it's designed just to get some thoughts across. After hearing from the client I'll incorporate their thoughts and redraw a lot cleaner.

Here's a work up on the Bug

The bug will be used as a template to redraw from in Illustrator.

great drawing ... as always. but the rear tyre looks a bit weird. the rim has negative camber but the part of the tyre that has contact with the ground doesn't have camber at all. the licence plate isn't at the same angle as the taillights either. apart from that, GREAT

it's still rough

once it goes into Illustrator the wheels with camber will be based off the same ellipse and eveything will lock down.

I decided to stay rough with my pencils this time since they are going to be redrawn anyway and I can save time.

Nice Lemorris!
Is that vw van manufactured like that or is that custom?

btw, what's the point of all that rear wheel camber?

IRS on the rear in VWs Alex.

In the VW world it's a very cool thing.

Here's a thread with a ton of slammed verts.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=146271&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

My car is dropped 2 notches on the back and my spring plate is notched so I get a little camber. It's an attitude thing. My front beam is narrowed 4 inches and has drop spindles as well. I have 135s up front and 205/65s out back so I'm dropped and raked.

You can see the lowering of my car here:

http://www.dhpvw.com/catalog/movies.php (I did all the vids)

It's a culture thing. Some dig it, some don't. This design is for a guy who rolls that way.

here's his toy...Jada has it.

Go get it.

nice work lemmorris id love to start putting my artwork into a computer and render like u ,what programmes or courses should i be looking at ive admired your work for ages now,im in lowdown australia so its not as if we have specific automotive design schools and the like its only graphic design colleges which doesnt really interest me,my passion is cars thanks for any feedback:)

worked up the Bus a little.

it's real rough too but i think it's attitude will translate well. I'm gonna go for it.

Normally I would redraw at least one more time but I feel dialed into this one so I'm gonna roll.

fun stuff

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_2.jpg

as far as schools and programs you know how I feel.

School is great but nothing beats practice.

Illustrator and Photoshop is all I use for my drawing stuff.

thanks, i just need to know more the computer side of things eg programmes im confident in my drawing skills although im always learning more i just like the real proffessional clean look that photoshop etc can give ,and how you can reproduce an image again and change its colours etc without having to redraw it allover again thanks again

the line work is don in Illustrator...that's the clean part.

Photoshop is used just to render.

Together they make a great tool.

I always thought that negative camber looked kinda cool on V-dubs, I've even drawn one with the camber issue... but always thought it was due to a bad lowering job. Anyway, love the bus! getting it to that point is the hard part. I'd love to learn computer rendering, but still am old-fashioned and like my fingers wrapped around a pencil to put the coloring to it. I'll be looking for the finished bus! Branden

Thanks guys

Al,...I got a cheap $50 HP scanner. Scans up to 1200 dpi which is times more than I ever use.

The cars were on 8.5 x 14 so I scan in 2 chunks and put them together in Photoshop.

I sopped spending lots of money on electronics about 10 years ago. The "new" great thing is the same cheap thing next year. I just spend $50 on a scanner every year and a half and don't sweat it.

Here's the sketch for the insert

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_3.jpg

It's still pretty rough but good enough to get the tweaks back from the client. I'll drop in his mods then start the Illy work.

Looks like I may start on the Bus tonight.

yay!

Update!

got started on the Bus tonight.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_10.jpg

I thought I'd show some of the wheel crap and a little bit of the how stuff.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_4.jpg
Here's the wheel in progress. I use the pen tool and just draw over my sketch lines.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_5.jpg
A little closer you can see I take some liberties. I'm not really going after "perfect" as I'm much bigger on feel and flaw. I think it adds character. Same reason Bugs Bunny cartoons are so great. Just my opinion.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_6.jpg
I drew all the wheel openings then duplicated each one and slid them over so the overlapping shape would create the depth of the spokes for me. Then I select the scissor tool and click a point where I want to cut on each end of the openings.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_7.jpg
Here's a closer look at the second point I set to cut.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_8.jpg
Then I use the direct selct tool (white arrow) and select the segment of the line that is outside of the spoke opening. I don't need this part so I delete it.

http://www.58vw.com/af/akw_9.jpg
There's my opening like I want it.

I'll do the same thing to cut out the parts of the tire and rim that go over the body.

You may ask "wait can you put color in those wheel shapes?" at which point I would say "nope" not at all. As a matter of fact the shapes are just lines. If you try to add fills you will get very angry and may even cry or pee.

I don't add color in Illustrator at all. Once I open the Illy file in Photoshop it changes the vector drawing to a bitmap essentially and the spaces between any intersecting lines become fillable by just clicking in the space with the magic wand tool.

The End.

I have just found that nothing beats "Time in craft". I know you understand.

I have studied art and art history just for fun for years. The experience you gain in school combined with your obvious drive will serve you well. I look forward to watching you grow.

Hey Lemorris I just noticed something your top channel says RGB. Is that the Alpha channel?

Thanks

lemorris
08-07-2006, 08:44 PM
I'm doing this one in an rgb file because I may have some text effects to do later and more options are available under rgb.

Ultimately the channels will be split so it doesn't matter that much at this point.

here's the latest. I fixed the poor taper on the rear end in Illy then re-imported just the bed to photoshop and replaced the old stuff. Small change but makes a difference.

Do you ever think about posting things like these up on VWVortex.com? I would say they definitely have a strong lean towards the water-cooled dubs there but there seems to always be someone selling t-shirts (especially on the MkI boards.) Maybe a little business lead there if ya haven't already tried... Anyone know of and threads in relation to the business aspects of auto sketching/rendering within AF?

Just a question: Do you use only gradients and pentool shapes, or do you incorporate some freehand stuff as well?
