I was in the middle of changing the spark plugs & wires on a 97 civic. bought new plugs and wires, pulled the first 3 out no problems,on the last spark plug i put the plug inside and tightened and put the plug wire on but it didnt seat properly so i pulled it back out and the little rubber cover(boot) on the end of the plug wire fell off INSIDE the hole around the spark plug. now the plug wire wont fit on correctly and i cannot pull the rubber boot off because its 2 deep and i cannot pull out the spark plug because the rubber boot is covering the bottom of the plug. I need help asap please i have no idea what to do to get the rubber boot out.

grab a pair of long needlenose pliers...if you dont have one deep enough..fish it out with a coat hanger or something....

peice of duct tape attached to the end of a coat hanger should get it out. Or if you have one of those long mechanics magnets, duct it too.

ill go grab a metal hanger and try to fish it out, my needlenose arent long enough nor is there enough room because the spark plug is still in there to grab the rubber boot, i tried a fishing hook on the end of my needlenose but it just makes holes through the rubber and doesnt bring it up .... UGH!!! this is not fun , thanks for the advice so far. ill update on the hanger

UPDATE duct tape didnt do anything, it seems to be wedged in pretty good i guess for a rubber boot. metal hanger just made some cuts in it but also didnt bring it up. im going to try to put a socket over it and press down with some force to maybe remove the spark plug than pull out any rubber down there and put new spark plug in. will it hurt my engine if some small pieces of rubber fall in? i mean tiny pieces like cuts from the boot? Thanks for the help.

If they're really small peices, it shouldn't cause any harm. The rubber will just vaporize from the heat of combustion.

UPDATE i used a metal coat hanger to form a small hook on the end to fish the stuck rubber boot out, but it never really came out i kept picking and breaking small chunks of rubber out enough until i could unscrew the spark plug than i removed the whole rubber boot with the hanger hook and cleaned out the hole as best as possible replaced the plug with a new spark plug reset the computer to clear the codes and all is well now. thanks for all the help.
i hope noone gets into this mess, it is a REAL bitch.
