Buying a used BMW 523 Kombi

Hi All
I've tried to dig up some information about the BMW 523 in the combi build.. to no avail. In the near future I'd like to import a BMW 523 1997/1998 combi with approximately 150.000 km on the meter -- and since the total cost (including the dreaded danish taxes) amounts to approximately 27-30.000 €, I'd like to be prepared ;-)
I've _heard_ that the 523 has a very reliable engine - and from looking at the internet the 523 has a pretty high used-price, which usually means that the car does not break down too easily and is reasonably when it comes to maintenance costs.
Can someone in here confirm that? I plan to save a few bucks on importing the car from Germany (not much - but they come with more equipment in Germany - hence more luxury at the same price) - and perhaps sell it again after a year or two; then it shouldn't have lost too much money.
My current car is a 1996 Ford Escort on which I change oil, cooling fluid, etc. (anythinh I can do in my garage with my two 40cm ramps) myself -- I plan on buying an OBDII plug for my laptop once I get a better car; I know BMW is not the fastest company in supporting OBDII, but I hope to be able to clear the "change oil" LED myself ;-) so any advice for a novice-amateur home-fixer will also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
