homemade PVC pipe intake?

As I understand it, the $30 eBay special short ram intakes are bad because the pipe they use conducts a lot of heat and heats up the air.
I'm thinking of using some 4 inch pvc pipe to make one and just buy a decent filter for the end of it.
Of course i would hook up the vacuum hose and everything.
And how about wrapping it with some insulating tape?
And don't tell me to just buy a K&N CAI. I'm not trying to spend that kinda cheese.

Don't use PVC and 4 inches is just plain ridiculous. If you want a cheap homemade intake get yourself a pre-bent pipe here (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2009635/showCustom-0/p-2009635/N-111+10201+600001731/c-10101) and cut it to size. I would not recomend anything over 3" diameter. There is a write-up with pictures on this method but the host site is down, when it's back up, I'll post the link.

You guys are missing the point. I don't want a steel pipe because it's said they conduct a lot of heat. The stock intake is made of thin plastic (95 civic d15). PVC would be an upgrade. And I was thinking to just elongate the pipe that comes to the air filter box by just adding about a 7 or 8 inch piece of pvc and then the cylindrical filter. This would also allow the mass air flow censor to stay put. What are you guys' thoughts on this?

There is no MAF sensor on a Honda. There is a MAP and its on your throttle body, not the intake tube.

I don't think you would even notice a difference between the two... Even the full balls out drag cars don't worry about it that much, they just heat wrap their METAL intake pipe, and stick a velocity stack on the end.

If you're that worried about heat... Just do what AudioGuy93DelSol said, get that pipe, and heat wrap it... Problem solved.

PVC pipes, when they get hot, emit a harmful fume. Could be deadly if you inhale enough of it and I'm not joking either. Get some pre-bent aluminum tubing and spray it with heat resistant engine paint. I made one for my old civic and it worked great.
