2004 GP Emissions/Street Legal Air Intake in NY!?

I'm trying to find a cold air intake for a 2004 Grand Prix GT2 that would pass emissions testing in NY. The only CAI have found is the K&N 63-1118 Aircharger, but it is NOT Carb exempt.

I called K&N directly to ask if it would pass NYS Emissions and they said they don't keep track of that and I need to check with "the NY small people...or something" (I have no idea what she what she was hinting at) but none-the-less I can't seem to find any info.

I'd rather not spend $250+ on a part I will have to uninstall later. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Most cold air intakes don't affect the ability to pass emissions testing as long as they function as the oem air cleaner does. I am not certain of how the '04 is set up but the earlier ones usually have no problems with CAI's passing emissions testing. Most will incorporate the air temp sensor and any other items that are stock to the car's air cleaner assembly.

This is easy, I am a NYS emissions inspector, this type of mod is ok if it does not cause a check engine lite as a result of say bypassing the iat sensor, which is in the stock ducting. Remember if the cel comes on after this mod and you clear the code to try and pass, it will fail unless the drive cycle to reset the monitors is done. Also do not over oil the filter during re-servicing, it will contaminate the maf.

Thanks so much for the replys! It seems as though I was confused about what the emissions tests did - the K&N kit I'm looking at incorporates the mass air sensor with it - so it looks like I'm good. Again, I really appreciate it!

From what I understand the K&N's 63-Series AirCharger Intake Kits are pending CARB status.

BTW - The kit does not have an intake air temperature sensor (IAT) or a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). You use your old ones. All K&N does is make provisions to properly mate up the ducting to the MAF sensor since the 2004 and up Grand Prix's have a MAF sensor like LS1 style mounted before the throttle body input.

There are a lot of other CAI/FWI available for a '04 and up GP not just K&N since failing the emissions test in New York may not be a factor just by virtue of having an aftermarket intake system installed. Good luck!
