I think the title pretty much sums it up!
Is it just to give more clearance for the transfer case and drivetrain?

Is there really a difference? How do you know? I can't tell the difference from my GS to any turbo or AWD models.

Maybe the eclipses are the same, but I have a Tsi and I got a 2g non turbo for my woman. Hers is a lot lower just stock.

Not sure about any mechanical aspects of the different heights, but the only thing I can think of is that they had different rim sizes. I had 15's on my old RS, and my GSX has 17's, and GS's/GST's have 16's.
