Air Conditioning

1995-1.3 Automatic

No cold air coming into the cabin. Blower fan works, the light on the
AC button lights up, I noticed the condenser fan does not turn on when
the AC is set to on.

I checked the fuse and it is good. The sight glass on the
receiver/drier is dark and I don't see any bubbles. I don't hear the
usual compressor noises, therefore I believe it's not kicking in.

Does this sound like a freon recharge or AC relay problem or something
else.

Sounds like an electrical problem to me. To check just verify with a DMM that voltage is present on the condensor fan and the compressor clutch. If no present you will need to try tracing the wiring to measure voltage at the different point to see what could be causing this. I would also check the voltages at the a/c relay as that could also be the problem.

Same type of thing happened to me this summer. One day it was blowing cold air, then nothing. Light on dash went on, but fan did not turn on or compressor. My mechanic said to check all the connections. I think there were 2 on the ac system and one from the compressor going to the harness. He said that the tiny little connectors inside will loose there contact, and sure enough, after playing with them, it now works again. Mine is a 93

Also forgot to add that another but less likely possibility is the temp sensor near the evaperator - it is supposed to shut off the a/c if the temp gets to near freezing to prevent the evaporator from icing up. I also believe there is a pressure sensor which shuts off the a/c is the event of the pressure being too high.

On my 96 Metro, same problem was traced to the connector block on the condenser. Simple fix was to add strain relief in the lead going to it, so there was no sideways pressure on the connector block.
