I cant get my escort to start. if i push the car and pop the clutch it works but i cant start it any other way. what could be causing the problem? Also there is a clicking noise coming from the top left area. there are two little boxs there (i dont know what their called) and the noise is coming from there. could that be the problem and if so how could i fix it?

Clicking noise coming from the top left area of what, and at what time? It happens when you attempt to start or it happens all the time while driving? "Top left area" while sitting in the seat or while standing in front of the car looking at the engine?

Have you had your battery checked?

When you turn the key to start the car does anything happen? Any sounds? Attempts to start but doesn't?

I'd bet your starter is dead... but I am jumping the gun. Get your battery checked first and try to provide more info here too.

Its the top left when looking at the engine. there are these two boxes their kinda small and i dont know what they are (in the top left corner). The noise only happens when i attempt to start the car. Its a new battery i just bought it not long ago. When i start the car it makes the clicking noise and trys to start.

To further clarify... I assume when you say it clicks and tries to start, that you mean the engine does not begin to rotate at all.

If so... do as I said and first check your battery. Either take it to Autozone and have them put the tester on it, or try the old method of turning on your key and then your headlights/wipers. If they won't operate... your battery is toast.
I will assume your alternator is good since it runs fine when you jump start. I will also assume your ignition switch is good since you get the click and the car does run.
If the battery checks out... it is most likely the starter solenoid. The starter is very easy to replace on these cars and can be reached either from underneath or by reaching around the intake from the side of the car.

my battery works fine so i guess that means i'll replace the starter and see if it works. thanks for the help. if that doesn't work then i'll let you know

make sure you either bench test the starter or have a shop confirm it is bad before you go buy a new one.

Get a terminal cleaner brush thingy and clean the hell out of your battery terminals and your lead clamps(remove at least the top layer of metal), then bolt them on tightly. I've noticed our cars are pretty sensitive to a good battery connection. In which case, that clicking would just be the relays popping as a result of the bad connection.

The two little boxes are A/C relays. One of them should click as the A/C cycles on and off.
