a/c leak from compressor?

I have a 97 Grand Cherokee. The a/c has a leak which we think is from the evaporator. The mechanic wants to replace the evaporator and accumulator for $600. Good deal? $300 for parts. could it be leaking from somewhere else?
Has anyone had any vacuum leaks at the a/c evaporator?

Find out what that mech gets per hr for labor. Then shop around. I had it done in cincinnati ohio for 485. But 600+ was not a rare quote.
