the vette is a bit quicker. it has 5 less hp but weighs several hundred pounds less. not to mention is is like 20k cheaper, and looks just as good.

heh guess what happend when they put both cars on the dyno? the Z06 made more power then the viper. so it has more power, lighter weight, more refined interior and can run toe to toe with a ford GT. Z06 wins.
even though the Viper coupe looks soo much more bad ass.

Vipers used to be extremely popular and cutting edge. Now they're kinda showing their age. Are there any Vipers in the LeMans this year? I used to be the biggest viper fan *looks over at viper phone* but now I'm more into the corvette because it's lighter and has a big engine.

the new Z06 is obviously the better car. Viper hasnt been updated for years...but on the other hand the Z06 just got a full make-over including a new motor. makes me wonder what the next step is for cars of the like, 1000hp from the factory?

The Z06's engine is still smaller than the Viper's (7.0 for the Vette vs. 8.1 for the Viper), but it is indeed more powerful. I don't know if there are any Vipers in LeMans, but I doubt the Viper has dropped off the performance radar. It's not very far behind the Z06 at all, and the Competition Coupe could probably still beat it.

I never knew the viper was ever cutting edge.
I was always under the impression that part of its "wow" factor is that it is amazingly simple.

Unless you are absolutely in love with the styling there isn't much of a reason to buy a Viper SRT10 right now. I believe the only numerical figure in which the Viper is superior in is torque.
Top Gear has tested both the Viper SRT10 and the C6 Z06 on their track. The Viper lapped in 1:28.5, a little slower then an M3 CSL, a little quicker then a Evo VIII. The Vette lapped in 1:22.4, right up near the Ferrari 360 CS and the Porsche 996 GT3, faster then the Lambo Murcialago. C&D found a similar result. I'm sorry, but if you are buying a car with performance in mind, you would be a fool to buy a Viper right now.

If numbers and lap times were all you cared about then fair call, but there is more to a car, and driving it, than how fast it go around a track and how much hp it has.
And Im afraid only a fool would think a lap of the top gear test track was objective.

as i stated earlier, don't trust the manufacturer's rating. the viper is rated at 5 more hp then the vette, but they you put both on the Mustang Dyno, the viper puts down 447whp while the Z06 puts down 453whp. so its actually the other way around. the vette is actually making around 10 more crank hp then the viper does, and weights 1-200 lbs less.
the only area where the viper wins in is in looks and torque. but the engine only revs to about 6000 while the Z06 revs to almost 7000

I would contend that if you were looking for a good all around car in this price range, you wouldn't be looking at either of these cars, you would be looking at a Porsche 911 or a BMW M5. The Viper and Z06 are both pretty performance focused cars.
While a lap of the Top Gear track won't tell the whole story, I think it gives you a good look at the bigger picture of these two cars. I really can't think of a single competition in which the Viper could beat the Z06. C&D and other magazines have run similar comparisons and as far as I know the Vette has won them all.

Depends if you own a car to make for a small penis, in which case the Vette is clearly the winner, or you own a car because you happen to enjoy its performance and driving dynamics, in which case the two are going to appeal to differnt slightly different buyers.
But, the Vetter is still technicaly better, its a more modern car, the Viper is over a decade old now.

I honestly have always thought of the Viper as being more of a "I'm compensating for something" car then the Corvette. Most people can't tell the Z06 from a base Corvette, while the Viper is quite the attention whore.
Regarding the horsepower question, its perfectly believeable that the Corvette puts more power down to the ground then the Viper. 95% of manufacturers measure hp at the crank. Large amounts of power are lost between the engine and the tires, and a car with a less powerful engine could theoretically put more power to the wheels with a more effecient drivetrain.
Even if the power was completely described by what the manufacturers claim, that 5-10 hp will be more then made up for by the weight difference.

when you're dealing with cars that have that much hp then 5 horses isn't really gonna make any difference. but yeah those extra 2 cylinders will def help if you're planning on putting some money into the performance (not that either car really NEEDS any upgrades from stock trim). i do agree that the vipers could use a slight upgrade in performance, but they're still faster than pretty much any car you're going to see on the road in a given day besides the occasionasl supercar. and DAMN do them vip's look sexy.

the LS6 intake (the one for the vette) is good for about 5 hp to the flywheel. some 00 models had it and all the 01/02 models had it. on the other hand, i guess for emmission regulations the 99+ ls1's have smaller fuel injectors than the 98. They have 26's as opposed to 28's, which problably compensates for the later year's better intakes. so technically i would think 99 has the potential to be the slowest model year eventhough they're all going to dyno very similar results.

I guess I'll throw my opinion in on here even though I'm very late to the party.
I'd take the ZO6 anyday of the week.
As for the Viper, I don't like it. Now many people know I'm a muscle car fan so they'd think "gee Muscletang you must really love the Viper, I mean it's got a big engine in it." No.
The reason I could never get into the Viper was because it was overrated and overpriced. When it comes to cubic inch vs. cubic inch Dodge is behind. The only reason the last Vipers beat the Corvettes is because they had pure size.
I'd rather have Dodge build a smaller more sophisticated engine than just throw in the biggest engine they can expecting it'll do. I mean I could do that if I wanted to. Get a decent looking car, throw a big engine in it, and I wouldn't have to pay close to $100,000 for it.
As for looks and "sex appeal" give me a break? If you drive a Viper and think "hey these girls want to have sex with me because of my car!" Congratulations, if brains were spit you wouldn't have enough to lick a stamp. It's not the car but the money it took to get it. Ever think why girls go for a guy who drives a new Benz heading for the mall? Hmmmmm
As for it being "rare" I think not. If I wanted a rare car I'd get a Skyline.
Now if this rumor is true and the Viper is getting 650 hp, that's a start. If they keep the price around $80,000 and offer a car with close to 700 hp I'm sold. To hell with European exotics I'll take that. It'll also give GM something to shoot for and maybe it'll force Ford to come out with the Shelby GR-1.

i've heard of multiple vipers in 4 places in my state, and they're massive cities. I live in one of those rich golf communities for retirees (live with my retired hardworking truckdriver grandfather and retired 37 year teacher grandmother, we didnt skate here), and everyone has corvies and corvies out the ass. We don't have any vipers. i'd take one just for the rarity. As far as the powerplant,
i love the sound of the v-10. power wise, it wins too. The chevy flywheel and transmissions are shit.
I love how the vipers are so agrressive through corners too.
