Radio install Question - 01 Jetta

Hi,
simple question, hopefully simple answer

2001 Jetta Wolfsburg
currently single din factory raid/cassette with shelf/cubby hole on top

Will a double din unit fit (obviously taking out the shelf) ?
I'm sure someone has done this so was it a difficult install? Dash modification, etc?
