Will SES light stay on when problem is fixed?

I have a small emissions leak and I am not sure where it is at. For starters I have replaced the gas cap and the light is still on. I was just wondering if the light will stay on when I solve the problem or it will go away when the problem is fixed? Also When I fill up my gas tank there is a strong fuel odor in the cabin for about a day then it goes away. Any suggestions?

The small evaporative emissions leaks are normally corrected within a few drive cycles and the SES light should go out.

Have you had any work with the fuel pump assembly done? When you get fumes in the cabin it may indicate an improperly installed fuel pump pod. There is a big o-ring seal to seal the pod to the gas tank. Also, it can cause a small leak evap. error.

The other possiblility is a broken line to the canister at the rear of the vehicle, allowing it to seep into the trunk and to the cabin.

I have not had any work done at all. It just came on when day when I was driving on the highway. I had the SES light reset once and it came on a few days later. I will check that o-ring. If I check the canister, how will I know if it is bad or not?

The check the evaporative emissions system you run a pressure/leak down test but that is hard to do DIY.

Inspect all vacuum lines from the gas tank to the charcoal cannister and at the vent solenoid and then going back to the engine at the purge solenoid.

In addition to the fuel pump/tank o-ring there is a vacuum line that goes from the charcoal cannister to the fuel pump pod top. It is a quick disconnect line just like the fuel filter has. It may have popped off. You can remove the access cover ( 7 nuts) located in the trunk behind the rear passenger seat to do a visual and smell inspection. Make sure the access cover seal is good too.
