They say it'll have an observation deck, and a private club above that at the top. Problem is, they're in Dubai, wtf is there to look at?

Wow...I think I remember watching TLD or the Discovery Channel, that's supposed to be the world's tallest skyscraper upon completion.
I say, UAE has alot of new and upcoming money there. I would vacation there. It looks really nice and elegant and modern. Not to mention gas is like 32984793276437927492384 less there lol.

ha ha, wikipedia is badass; found this:
Apparently, this is the tallest man-made standing structure on land in the world:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/KVLYDistance.jpg
A transmitting tower (photo from ~1 mile away) in North Dakota . It is 2,063 ft (628.8 m) tall.
It must suck for that one guy who has to change out the red bulb at the top.
However, this Dubai tower should blow that away also.

Chicago is supposed to be designing a new tower, i'll see if i can find the plans for that, it's supposed to be in the shape of an almost twisting spire.
Edit: Found it, it's called the Fordham Spire, it's going to be absolutely gorgeous, it may not end up being the tallest, but the design is just amazing.

What makes the Dubai and Taipei -sp? towers look even crazier is that the surrounding buildings are not nearly as tall. The Sears Tower is tall but there are numerous tall buildings around it, making its stature not as astonishing. That proposed twisting spire looks pretty badass though. I look forward to driving by it along LSD

if it's in dubai it's not "your hard earned oil" (assuming you mean america) since it's the built on money from the UAE's oil reserves.

Dubai is gay. :thumbsdow
Skyscrapers were invented due to lack of space....so you build UP instead of OUT. There's tons of space in the UAE so there's no real reason to build something that tall except to try to show off all the money you have. That building is on par with an Escalade with 24" rims and a 10,000 watt stereo. The only thing cool about it is the fact that it's an engineering marvel, and somebody said it's a US company building it so good for us I guess.
It seems as though Dubai is desperately trying to become a world city by building tall buildings. Sorry, but you buy your way in to the ranks of such cities as NYC, Paris, & Hong Kong.

The world cities ranking groups them as
Full service world cities (London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Milan, Chicago, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore)
Major World Cities (Sydney, Zurich, San Francisco, Toronto, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Madrid, Brussels, Moscow, Seoul)
Minor World Cities (Taipei, Dusseldorf, Houston, Jakarta, Dallas, Prague, Santiago, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Warsaw, Istanbul, Manila, Washington DC, Miami, Atlanta, Barcelona, Berlin, Kuala Lumpur, Budapest, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Johannasberg, Shanghai, Hamburg, Munich, Minneapolis, Buenos Aires, Boston, Caracas, Geneva, Bangkok, Beijing, Rome, Montreal and Osaka)
Cities with evidence of world city development (Auckland, Helsinki, Dublin, New Dehli, Philadelphea, Rio de Janerio, Mumbai, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Luxembourg, Lyon, Athens)
Cities with a bit of evidence (Abu Dhabi, Almaty, Birmingham, Bogota, Bratislava, The Hague, Kiev, Montevideo, Dubai, Detroit, Cairo, Ridyah, Rotterdam, Oslo, Lisbon, Lima, Seattle, Stuttgart, Cleveland, Vancouver, Brisbane, Bucharest, Ho Chi Minh City, Manchester)
Cities with sweet FA all evidence, but some would consider a city: (Tehran, Adelaide, Antwerp, Wellington, Kansas City, Marsielle, Leeds, Turin, Cape Town, St Petersberg, Richmond, Tashkent, Tijuana, Utrecht, Columbus, Bangalore, Bologna, Genoa, Gothenberg, Glasgow, Brasilia, Calgary, Guangzhou, Lille, Hanoi.
Yeah, I typed them out for no reason other than there are places I don't want to be this morning. So sue me.
I think these rankings are a load of crap though. Zurich is not a major world city, it's a crap hole.

Anyways, the Aussies might be building a 1000m tower.
Its a solar tower used to harness solar energy.
similar to this, but bigger
http://www.monsterdesign.co.kr/image/solar_tower.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c2/OzTowerCompare.jpg
The tower is a hollow tube with air in the middle.
Solar heat beams down on it (also up from the mirrors) and heats up the air in the middle.
Hot air rises causing "wind" to form in the tube (air inlets at the bottom). The wind in-turn, rotates fan blades inside the tube. These are hooked up to generators to create power.
I doubt Australia will actually make this, but meh...

As Far as dubai an money/oil goes. Yes, Oil is what powers there tremendious income but they aren't bad people by anymeans. Quite cool from the one's I've talked to anyway...
Also There are two 7 star hotels in the world both are in dubai... (funny isn't it)
In all honesty it's like this guy I saw at a car show the other day. This small guy very geeky & VERY Feminine is walkin around showing off his ride he's about 5.5 an maybe 150lbs an drives a Ford F350 Raised about 4 feet with rollbars, L.E.Ds, and a 4000 watt sound system with tons of other crazy shit. Whats the point? Overcompensation maybe....?

Anyways, the Aussies might be building a 1000m tower.
Its a solar tower used to harness solar energy.
similar to this, but bigger

The tower is a hollow tube with air in the middle.
Solar heat beams down on it (also up from the mirrors) and heats up the air in the middle.
Hot air rises causing "wind" to form in the tube (air inlets at the bottom). The wind in-turn, rotates fan blades inside the tube. These are hooked up to generators to create power.
I doubt Australia will actually make this, but meh...
Trust the Aussies to build the biggest phallic symbol of them all.
Compensating much? ;)

edit - I stand corrected. ball of twine... making it out of rubber bands would be silly
