A couple of weeks back on the way to the movies, my '94 GTP (3.4L) cut off on me on the highway. I let it roll to the side of the road, got it towed and then got it looked at. I was told it was the timing belt.

So i let it sit, and then on thursday i put it in the shop, and the mechanic is telling me he's not sure yet, but i might have bent the valves, and suggested that if i did to replace the motor.

I will keep you guys updated, but i'm just interested in how much i can get a motor for, if anyone on here is selling one or knows where i can get 1 for cheap, and etc.

ok, just got off the phone with the mechanic, he said i bent 2 of the valves and he's not sure how the ones on the bottom look -- he's trying to get me to just put a new motor in

but he said i have 2 choices: he can send the bent valves out to get fixed and or get a new motor.. to get the vales unbent he said it'll be $300 a piece and a new motor plus the labor will be $1000

i called my uncle and he said i'm better off just getting the valves unbent b/c i only plan on having the car for another 9 months

Surely you can find new valves for that engine. I wouldn't want unbent valves put back in.

Suggestions?

I do not see valves for that engine listed at AZ, Advance, or OReilly's. May be a dealer only item now or check with ed morad on ebay.
If I was only keeping it for 9 more months, I'd patch it up the cheapest I could.

http://www.napaonline.com/images/u_clear.gif http://www.napaonline.com/images/u_clear.gifIf your mechanic is going to charge you 300.00 each to "unbend" valves, smile nicely and call the first tow truck you see to get that car as far away from him as possible. As you can see above NAPA has valves for less than 15.00 each. Not to mention the fact that you can not straighten a valve.
Call a few machine shops and find out what they charge to do a valve job. That would be the worst case scenario along with the labor to r&r the heads.

I hope by "un-bending" the valves, he meant doing a valve job. Otherwise take gprixgtp's suggestion and push, pull or carry it to any other repair facility. A good used 3.4 DOHC is almost impossible to find, so fix your existing one, at least you know the history on it.

You may want to consider how much more life you expect to get out of a 94,chances are you'll do these repairs and something else will blow up.
But if your determined to keep the car I would see if I could find a set of heads at the wreckers.
Someone should send out that mechanic hes the one that sounds bent.

well after calling about 50 different machanic shops out of the phone book, i've come to the general concensus that a valve job costs between $600 and $800
