Possible Gear linkage problem

I have a 1998 BMW touring (Straight 6 Cylinder 2.5L Manual). I have only had the car a couple of weeks but have noticed a problem with the gears.
When you are in 5th and pull the lever back to allow it to spring into neutral (in between 3rd and 4th), it dosent allways do it, it will stay just about in line with 5th gear. You have too push it too the left manually. It dosent take any force but you do feel a slight "click", as you push it past whatever the "obstruction" is.
Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know what it is.
Its not a massive issue, it mainly causes a problem when you want to go from 5th to 3rd as sometimes I end up back in 5th and have to try again.
P.s. not driven a BM of this age before, but actually going into 5th itself isnt as smooth as i would expect it too be.
Thanks for your time
Dan

Dan,
Check your gear box fluid. The last time a manual started shifting hard I dropped it on the interstate. Lack of lubrication can make the connection between the shifter and the forks not work well. It can get a lot worse.
Check the fluid first.
If that does'nt help you may have to remove your boot and stick and replace some of the parts. The cover, shifter ? Good luck.

I think its fine because this obstruction u talk of is stopping ppl from pulling them out of gear w/o pusing the clutch in.when it clicks it goes past it cus u pushed the clutch in so it makes the clickin sound thats more of a feel then a sound.if it was linkage probs then somewhere from 1st to 5th it would bind or be hard to put in a certain gear.w/o its been wrecked the rod souldn't be bent or warped. Hope this helps
