More on getting ready to drive cross-country: What is involved in a tuneup for a 2000 5.3 with 90,000 miles? Can it be tuned up? I'll replace plugs and wires, air filter and fuel filter are done, Mobile 1 and new oil filter changed.
Is there a distributor that can be changed on this engine?

No distributor. You should also get a PC Valve, change airfilter, (including the cabin air filter), maybe run a good fuel system cleaner too. I like to use Berryman's B-12 (the metal can). 1 can per tank is plenty.

Check your tires, brake fluid, PS fluid, Trans fluid.

if you really want to get into it, get some TB cleaner that oughtta give you some better MPG.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply. Most of those things are already completed but the TB cleaner sounds like a good idea. Changing the cabin filter was a revelation - I was so glad to learn that the smell wasn't my B.O.
