Name my Diesel Blazer Project

OverBoardProject

I'm looking for a good name for my Blazer now that the work is about to start.

I should have the diesel pulled on Monday, and in a friends shop getting new bearings, gaskets and what not. Plus I'll be sending the transmission off at the same time for a re-build. (reverse doesn't work)

Then on Wensday if the weather's good I'll start the body lift, and pulling the 2.8L drivetrain.

I've done some re-search and found the differentials that I'll be getting.
A Dana 30 front from a Jeep, and a Dana 60? that I found in a 70 International Scout.
I'll hopefully pick them both up in about a week, and be ready for the front suspension work shortly after that period.

I won't make any promises, but would like to have it running, and most of the bugs worked out by the end of August. I've got a big fishing trip planed then, and the Blazer would perfect for it. Not to mention that several British Columbia people are very intrested in the project and looking forward o it running.

Edit, When this is done the only bolts that I will have never replaced on the Blazer are under the dash. And I'm hoping that I can leave them alone for life

neat Stu. It sounds like you've got a great plan going on. Hope it all works out.

Thanks Mike, you've probably figured out that my rods are put on hold this year.

With a little bit of luck I'll start posting pic's as early as Wensday, if I get the body lift done then.
Although I'm taking the full nose off so I won't have a completed body lift until I get the engine all installed.

Blazee, if you don't mind I'll get you to re-name this thread to Project ? after we find a good name for it.

Little Smoky?

Bliesel?

Probably neither. I'll be interested to hear/see how it turns out.

Thanks biv, Bliesel is in the number 1 place so far.

I hope that it cools down here a little so I can work in comfort, We're living up to the name Canada's Hot Spot today. 104.0 + degrees F at the race track today

No name yet, but I'm starting to work on the Blazer.

I did a 3" body lift today
Sorry that it's dirty, and I'm in no big hurry to put the taillight back on until I decide what to do with the tire rack. (I brace that lower cab corner to the frame and had to take the brace off)

Before (taken last year)

today

I didn't get the bumpers re-located, and to be perfectly honest I was very disapointed to buy the body lift kit without any bumper re-locatng brackets.
I could really care less about the back bumper since I'm modifing my trailer hitch tucking it right up to the top and I'll probably have it extended into a bumper.

I've been watching this, sounds very interesting, so keep it updated if you can as you progress. I forgot, correct me if I am wrong, but you pulled a diesel from a benz if I heard right?

Thanks blazes

I actually ended up buying this 85 Chev 4x4 with a 6.2L

I got the entire truck for $900.00 Canadian, and it runns really nicely. Although the transmission needs some work.
It's got a posi 12 bolt rear end, and an off road package, which might just all find their way into my Blazer. :evillol:

The motors ready to pull from the diesel, but I still need to pick up the engine hoist. It'll be out this weeked if everything works out.

Wow. 6.2L huh. That thing has got to have some mean low end torque.

It might not be a name but im thinking, "will tow 7.3 and 6.0 fords for free" written on the side. Jk thought it would be funny.

How about the frankenblazer. Like i said im thinking.

This project does look interesting, ive never seen someone tr it yet.

6.2, if you can stuff that thing under there, that blazer will be a monster!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::r ofl::rofl:

And that's a good name as well.

It'll be a tight fit under the hood alright. But then again I like tight things :evillol:

It will fit, but I really don't think that it would have without the body lift. I'm bashing in the firewall for extra clearance and moving everything back as much as possible.

I read where someone bolted in a 5.7L which is a modified 350 buick motor once, but I'm not aware of anyone bolting in the 6.2L which I believe is a Detroit Diesel.

It's a good thing that I've got good friends that are welders, fabricators and mechanics. I've managed to get them all intrested in the project as well, otherwise I'd just forget about it.

The photos will keep coming as I get the jobs done. I'll be starting to remove the 2.8L and transmission this week.

^ and the stock 2.8 is better. the 2.8 is one of gm's worst designed motors.

I thought the 6.2's were OK. The 5.7's were junk. My dad had a 1980 Chevy with a 5.7 - bought it new. It was in the shop more than it was on the road.

BLAZENSTEIN. Its better but i got another one you can wright some where.

You know how jeep guys say its a jeep thing. "its a blazer thing and il tow your jeep with it". Doesnt sound as funny now but it did last night when i had the remains of a 12 pack sitting next to me.

The main problem with the 6.2L was they had less power than both Ford and Dodge then.

But at 135hp and 240 ' lb of torque I think that it'll do nicely in my Blazer.

They still make it's bigger brother the 6.5L turbo motor for the hummer H1, so the parts are easily available.

edit, I see that they're using a 6.6L duramax in the Hummer H1 now

OverBoardProject

I haven't done anything noticable in the last few days. I have to wait until monday to borrow the engine hoist (no pickup access until then plus he just burned out my 1/2" drill so I don't really want to see him)

However I've started the web page

I see that they're using a 6.6L duramax in the Hummer H1 nowIt's about time. I see a surge in Hummers being sold. They ought to do quite well power wise and milage too.

OverBoardProject
07-01-2006, 09:51 PM
I don't think that they actually put a diesel in the H2's and I know that they don't in the H3's.
So I think that the only way that someone can buy a Hummer with a Diesel motor is to buy the military version

Jeep is the only company that makes a Diesel in their smaller SUV's, and I've heard rumers that they'll start putting them in the Dodge Dakota as well soon

are you thinking of also doing a bio-diesel conversion?

OverBoardProject
07-02-2006, 01:30 AM
Naw, I'll be running a second tank in the back and fill it with used vegi oil from the restrants :evillol: (They usually give it away and can't get rid of it all)

Although I wouldn't mind making my own bio diesel for the winter when the Vegi oil doesn't work as good.

The conversion comes first.

I'll see if I can get permission to post pic's of that other Blazer with the bumpers and suspension that I'll be coping to a point.

I won't promise that this'll be finished tomorrow, but don't be suprised if the hood opens forward as early as tomorrow night. Although I'll still have to brace everything.

My old high school friends modified a peterbuilt sign to say Stubuilt and stuck it on all my projects back then.
I've got a few more pictures to add. After I took the parts truck nose off.

I got everything worked out to make the hood open backwards, but need less than $10.00 in parts from the hardware store to do the work.

The cherry picker is in the back of a pickup right now and I'll have the 6.2 and transmission pulled in the morning and in a friends shop for the work scedualed

I'm hoping that I'll have everything back by next weekend and ready to install it. Although I'll need some custom motor mounts made before I can get that job done.

Fine by me Blazee, although I don't know what Igor will say if he happens to find this thread :grinyes:

Motor and transmission are now pulled, and the motors been taken apart already and re-bearing'd Although it turns out that it didn't need it.

Popped the frost plugs out and I was plesently suprised to find that it was even clean in cooling passage. The new Brass frost plugs have been ordered and the motor should be ready to go shortly after.
I'm only being charged around $70.00 labor for the engine work, and my friend has helped me out with a few odds and ends for free as well. He has a good reputation building high horspower race motors. (I help him out a lot as well, including worked the pits for him last weekend at the races)

The transmission shop will be called tomorrow, and will probably have it ready to go thursday. This one charges a little more but they honor their warranty and will fix it on the spot.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to start the instalation on Monday.

Here's the motor now. My friend finished with it, but I still have to wash it again, put new frost plugs in and paint it.

The board can still decide a name for the project, but I now have a name for the final product
here it is, and it came from a good friend of mine that's helping me with the work

and here's what's going in next week sometime
http://www.kvsbt.com/stu's/Chevy%204x4%20conversion/DSC01631.JPG

The transmission was re-built and the motor has new bottom end bearings and brass frost plugs in. Along with the hard to reach gaskets replaced. (non were leaking and I want to keep it that way)
I'll hopefully have the motor painted before it goes in, but it's hard getting engine paint in a small town. I don't want to take the 2 hours out to go buy some (the parts store has forgotten to bring it out 4 days in a row now)

Just 1 update, I got the motor / transmission pulled today
http://www.kvsbt.com/stu's/Chevy%204x4%20conversion/engine's%20gone.JPG
I'm heading for Kelowna to look at another Blazer with a really nice SAS tomorrow, and will probably get some good ideas about the next big job.
Thanks Sean [cheers]

I really won't get much more done all week, other than clean up.
Although I will hopefully have the time to rip the front diff out of the parts truck and install the POSI.

Other than updating my project I don't think that I'll be spending much time on AF for the rest of the summer.
