The best way to get it going is to buy a Bentley manual, a bit expensive, but worth every $/£/€.

I need help starting my Volkswagon Rabbit.
rabbits can be very easy to get going, even for a beginner. three main things to look for would be spark(pull a plug and put the wire back on it,then lay the plug on your valve cover. turn the key and see if a spark arcs to the close metal of the valve cover) if not follow the wire all the way to the battery. second thing would be fuel(pull fuel line near carb,or disconnect 13mm bolt on the fuel distributor. caution, fuel under pressure) then check for air flow restrictions and make sure the timing belt is not damaged. have a buddy with a timing light check the timing. then send it to the shop. fuel injection models have an allen bolt hidden on the top of the fuel distributor between braided line outlets and round rubber boot. USE MINIMAL ADJUSTMENTS ONLY good luck and always saftey first

If You Have An Older Model Rabbit, Check Your Points. My 1980 Rabbit Also Would Get Like "vapor Locked" Especially When It Was Hot Outside. Unscrew Your Gas Cap Slowly, And If You Hear Hissing Like Pressure Being Released, That Might Be Your Problem.
