Plastic you need to built and paint it. Diecast you open the box and put the model in the display (kinda useless in my opinion) This is way better when you done the model by yourself..

I'm from Canada too (Quebec)
I buy only Tamiya kit (since Revell make me sick) My last order was for 4 Kit (Ford Focus 2001 WRC, Ferrari 360 Spider, Mercedes CLK-GTR and Mitsubishi Evo 5 WRC) and cost me 150$Can. add to this about 30$ of paint and brush... it's about 45$Can/model with paint.
But again, my model cost me between 32$Can and 48$Can each (48$ for the Ferrari.) and not 13$ like your (that is very cheap ! lucky ;-)
So it's quite expensive.. but you only got one life ! make what you like !
and come to this forum, you will learn a lot of stuff.. that help me

here in my state ( NY ) the only die cast models i find are the ones where the body is already put together and you just screw on the floor pan and then you put the wheels on. So they arent much fun. And they range around 20 US $ But the plastic ones are like 10-15 $ And the plastic are more fun to put together.. more time and work..but fun
