Installing new turn signal cam

Does anyone know of the steering wheel off any airbag equipped model can be removed with a simple $7 steering wheel puller, or will I need a more complex tool to get it done? The airbag module won't be a problem because I already have a torx driver set. Also, if anyone has ever changed a turn signal cam, write back with any advise! It's greatly appreciated!:)

Assuming the turn signal cam is the white plastic piece in the column that moves for the turn signal, then it is fairly easy to replace...assuming you have all the tools to do it.

I don't know much about the airbag, but once you get the wheel off you need a lock plate compressor to get a c-clip off (this will allow you to remove the plate). Next, there will be three screws on the cam itself an one more holding the windshiled wiper switch to the cam. The cam is free at this point so pull it out a little bit, as much as the slack on the wires will allow. Now you have to remove the lower dash and unscrew the bolt (7mm) holding the column wire harnesses together. Unlcip the wire strip from the main harness. Now, you have to remove a little plastic strip that is slid into the bottom of the column to hold the wires in tight (it is just clipped in). At this point you may be able to slide the wires out through the front, but probably not. You will probably have to remove the three torx bolts that hold the outer casing and the one torx bolt that holds the lock cylander in. Remove both and you should have better access to the wires and the clip.

I just did this (except for the windshield switch instead of the blinker cam) a couple nights ago, so it is still fresh in my head :)

Alright, thanks for the tips Alibi i'll have them with me when I get a chance to tackle the project (preferably at night when there's no sun baking me inside!)

Hey DioGreer, I have the SAME EXACT problem you had with the signal not cancelling after left turns, so I'm pretty sure I've got the right idea! I read your thread about the job, thanks for sharing the great info.

Cool!

I used a standard steering wheel puller available for about $20 or so. It comes with several different types of bolts to fit the threads on the wheel behind the airbag.

About the spring compressor tool... You can probably get or possibly rent(?) a suitable tool from the dealer, but its just a U shaped piece of metal with a hole for the center of the wheel in the middle.

You put the tool in over the middle shaft and tighten the steering wheel nut over it, compressing the shaft lock plate. Once its compressed, you gotta get that annoying spring clip out.

Id recommend getting special pliers (like needle nose, but the grip is on the outside of the needle nose instead the inside) to remove the clip. It'll save some time and hassle compared to me using some standard needle nose pliers, a flat head screwdriver and some other stuff.

You can rent a lock plate compressor from Autozone for free :)

As for the annoying c-shaped clip, I just used two small flathead screwdrivers to pry it off.
