Canceling your account could be just as much of a nightmare as the service itself :banghead: :

The AOL guy just wanted to know why.
If he simply answered truthfully to begin with (guy did use it recently; 500+ hours/month), it wouldn't have escalated.
Its quality control; a form of "constructive critism".

Still, the AOL dude should of just bypassed that step after about the 2nd time of trying to get 'Vincent' to tell him why.
Sidenote about AOL, my mom used AOL for the longest time for her business email, simply cause it was cheap and easy for her (novice computer user at the time), finally when we able to upgrade to highspeed internet (our area wasn't able to get it cause of it's lack of people, industrial area)... anywho, she finally got around to cancelling it some months back. I mean, completely canceled, like you can't use the account at all (which for all intensive purposes would mean cancelled correct? hehe)
She still recieves bills from AOL saying she owes like $160 in back payments. She was like WTF... not sure what she's done, but I'm sure she's already called and chewed them out.

My mom gave up trying to get rid of AOHELL. Once we get a cable modem we are going to fight like hell.

I used it for the longest time. When I cancelled they asked why. I said "Because I want to." I just kept repeating that. Put that in your fucking report.
It got cancelled, no charges.
There was another time though, while I had it, that they wanted to charge my unlimited minutes account, for usage. I called them up and said "Bullshit! If it's not unlimited, then fucking rename it! If you try to nail me with these charges, I'm suing your asses for false advertisement! Put THAT in your fucking report!!!" Yeah, I didn't get charged. Poor India dude though, he was just doin' his job for $0.55/hour.

My family had AOL when we first started using the internet. Mainly because it was easy to navigate for the novice users. Now that we go through comcast its way better.

When technology caught up with my area and I switched to comcast I dumped aol. After dealing with them for 25 minutes and finally got the account canceled, I called my credit card company, told them I disconnected the service, please block all new charges from them. Worked pretty good as they tried to charge me for the next month.

I had to make at least 5 calls to AOHell to cancel because I didn't have half an hour to sit around and wait for Ishmael to finally listen to me and cancel the stupid account. Watching his report on the Today show the other day was like deja-vu. Craziness.

It doesn't matter why. Nor does it matter whether he gave them a truthful answer. He wanted his account terminated and it should be one question of "may I ask why" not a never ending escapade.
My dad had quite a time years back cutting off our AOL account, not like this guy and apparently others. If I was still with AOL I would have cancelled my account immediately on hearing this. I hope they go down the tubes.

No it is their way of using strong arm tactics to lull you into another month or two so you will get tired of sitting on hold for half hour or more to spend 45seconds to tell them to cancel your account because the evil monkey in your closet made you get a cable modem.
Lots of people still use AOL bc they were brought up on it and it was made so easy for the non technically inclined that many of them cannot deal with ip settings etc. It is nowhere near as hard as it used to be to get on the internet when AOL was the 'easy way' but many people are happy enough with it and don't know any better.

it's been almost a year since i canceled it (had to get a 3 month account for the summer) and they are still calling!!!
i make up something new each time: no comp, i go to library, i just got dsl, etc
although, when i said i dont have a comp, they asked if i went to the library. WTF!? Thry actually said you can upload our software there and i told them they might not like that and he kept saying it'd be no problem, etc. Finally i just yelled at him on how AOL software sucks and is os pointless...
he sounded sad saying"oh. ok sir. im sorry. have a goodnight." in the most depressing voice. i feel like i hurt his feelings or something.
oops...
EDIT: So who thinks people are going to get more people fired now? Heck, as many calls as I get and they won't shut up, I'm thinking AOL made a bad decision with a apology like that, 'cause all the like that.
