My check engine light is currently on. It has been this way for about a year or so. The car operates fine. Is there a way to diagnos the light without buying a decoder? I would leave it alone but I have inspection coming up.
Thanks for the help.

Gotta know what year it is...if it's older than '96, the answer is yes.

IF it's pre-94, a paper clip can be used to pull the codes. If it's 96-newer, a code reader is required, and Auto-Zone and Advance both pull codes for free. If it's a 94-95, it has different set-up that they cannot scan, and you'll have to take it to a shop and pay to get it scanned.
