Would Mclaren ever make another LM spec engine for a customer ?

You mean BMW...

I think they would, but it would not be cheap.

Just wondering whys theres only ever been one other F1 with a LM spec engine apart from origonal 5 LMs, if i was a F1 owner i would want the best engine in the back that BMW could produce :)

The story goes that there are actually two road cars that have the LM engine fitted - I suspect that second car is #018, but it hasn't been confirmed. I think they just had two extra engines lying around at the time and offered them to certain clients who were also interested in the High Downforce Kit - I don't think it was a widespread option. Whether it could be repeated at this point is anyone's guess, but like the others alluded to, a big pile of money will open many doors. ;)

Anyone who's ever driven/ridden in an F1 will tell you that adding more power to the car is almost a ridiculous idea. It has difficulty putting the power it has down off the line and careful throttle modulation is required to keep from spinning the tires into smoke.

Also there were 6 original LMs if you count the prototype. :)

They've retrofitted two cars.

In 2000 BMW Motorsport realised that they had a few extra LM engines sitting around. They offered them to McLaren.
McLaren went to all road car owners and offered the engines to them. The catch was that they would not allow the engine replacement alone; one had to have the HDK fitted as well.

As I say, only two owners took up the proposition. Ever since this time McLaren have said that the offer is no longer available.
As minimagic points out, with enough money you can obtain almost anything, so who knows?

After this offer expired, BMW put one of the remaining engines in a company X5.

I've always wondered what the story was with the X5 Le Mans. Thanks

What happens if someone blows the engine on a car? Do McLaren have certain engine parts ready to fix this or do they have spare engines or do they have to re-cast the engines?

This is correct.

Most appreciated.

I suppose if money was no object then there must be a certain amount of cash that would get you the keys to Mclarens own LM ?

McLaren will do some things inside the engine, but major service or repair work would be done by BMW (very little need for that to date).
If you had, say, a hole in a piston, BMW would do the repairs.
If you had a hole in the block, McLaren wouldn't need BMW to install the replacement engine, but undoubtedly BMW would want to have a close look at the remains of the original engine.

Hello,

very interesting post since tortoise appears. I wonder which power produce the LM engines ? I read 650hp in 1996 then 680 here, where is the truth.
Also, is it true McLaren continue engineering on motors and late F1s made more power than earliers ?

Thanks
Phil

PS : I hope my english is understood by all ;)

The Christies info on #073 quoted the power figure of that engine at 691hp, which I am almost certain was obtained on an engine dyno.

All engines have slight variances and the two quoted power figures I have seen for the LMs (680hp and 668hp) have less than 2% difference between them which is pretty negligible in my book.

An X5 with almost 700 horsepower? That's ridiculous!

I thought it was pretty damn cool myself. :grinyes:

Hans Stuck set a record time at the Nordschleife driving the 750 horsepower, V12-powered BMW X5 Le Mans. With a target of less than eight minutes he covers the historic 20.8 kilometre circuit in 7:49.92, reaching 311 km/h (193 mph) on the straight.

I actually know of someone who DID have the wherewithall to venture into this area and was told "Not For Sale!"

I think at one point, according to David Clarke at Taylor and Crawley , mclaren did offer the Mclaren F1 GT for sale at over a million.

I am thinking GBPounds, otherwise I'd consider it to be a bargain.

Our long lost friend tvrfreak reported the very same thing from his visit to the factory - £1M was the price to take the F1 GT (56XPGT) home with you. Of course that was before road car prices really jumped, so the GT's price may have climbed accordingly.

Yeah - I have a feeling it was sold sometime in 2005 - destination unknown.
