i got a 90 gst and i know the dipsticks are prone to popping out since i read about it on this site and also by expierence. well last night i pulled into my drive way and popped my hood and i could see a orange glow under the heat shield one the exhaust manifold. it was my manifold that was glowing. my friend who has a 98 gsx looked at it then popped his hood and his was the same.

I've read that if you run hard at night, you can heat up your turbo and exmanny hot enough to glow. I've never done it personally, but I bet it looks pretty sweet.

pretty sweet? it scared the hell out of me because i thought something was on fire under there. but as long as it's semi normal its cool. we were running pretty hard. about 2 mins before i popped my hood we were both doing 1xx+mph

you mean the heat sheild that usually has a hand with an X through it warning you not to touch it? heh, exhaust gases are extremely hot, but they loose heat exponentially on their travel down the pipes, thats why you get a warm gas standing near the muffler, and can burn your skin off at the manifold. My friend was recently tossed off his bike and got a nasty burn on his leg, it was running straight pipes and on a motorcycle they're about 4 ft long

well nobody said we were stupid enough to touch it. the heat shield wasnt glowing, it was the manifold underneath.

did i say you were? i was merely referecing to the logo on the heat sheild to point out that this was a common occurance. did you even read the rest of my post? or did you take offense at my inital sentence then stopped reading? I know what you meant, and I answered your question...

yea i didnt shut it off for a couple minutes. i left it to idle and i put the heat on to draw some heat from the engine. i didnt shut it off until it stopped glowing.
anybody think it could get hot enough to become molten?

no that is actually a cooling problem
when the turbos run red is when usually the apex seals are gone
he also needs a bigger intercooler if he's gonna drive it that hard!

You guys need to remember that the turbos impeller spins at 160,000+ RPMs. For petes sake if you are going to drive it hard drive it around for about five min to let the turbo cool. If you just shut the car off you can expect it to die around 75,000 miles at the most. You might also want to run a synthetic oil. It is always a good idea for people that run turbos.

i said i did let it cool down. i had it just idle with the heat on for probably almost 10 minutes. the mechanic at the dealer that sold me this car said i should use mobil one synthetic 15w-50 or something. he said its only made in two grades and i should use the higher one. but the other day i was talking to somebody at work and he was like whoa that kind of oil is for semi-tractors and big dumptrucks and caterpillar engines ect... so what is recommmended?

Actually it is racing oil. Either way you don't need it. You should use a synthetic as it is better for the turbo but you should use 10w-30. As for the cooling comment, that was for some other people.
