94 - transmission shift problem

After changing the fuel pump in my 94 Villager, all of a sudden the trans starts acting up. Shifts fine from a stop to full speed...1,2,3, OD. But when reaching speed and start to slowly release the accelerator pedal, it kicks (literally) out of OD and back to 3rd. Slightly pushing down on the accelerator shifts it back to OD. Letting off...the cycle continues. Shifting back and forth on the highway at 60 to 70 mph must do the trans a lot of good. After the engine is fully warmed, coming to a complete stop and restarting seems to cure the problem until the next cold start up. I know these trannys are heavy in the electronics, but is this sounding like a TPS or maybe the modulator? Why it goes away after heating up and stopping is baffling me.
Thanks all.

The clues are in your question: "slowly release the accelerator pedal.......Slightly pushing down on the accelerator ..."
sounds like the TPS to me...after it heats up sounds like the O2 sensor is taking over...
I'd check the TPS, it won't cost you anything but a little elbow grease and time.

I had the same issue with my 95....If you can get your hands on an analog Ohm meter set it to read resistance. (analog meters have a needle while the digital meters use numbers and it hard to see the resistance change)

With the engine off, remove the two, two wire connectors, on the TPS. Connect your meter to the TP switch side NOT the removed connectors. Slowly move the throttle cable by hand and observe the meter reading, disconnect and connect to the other side of the switch and repeat,
You should see a nice smooth resistance change on the meter, if you see the needle jump or jerk, fall to zero, then the TPS is bad, this appears to be quite common part on the Villager that goes bad, since its mechanical it wears out.

It cost $60.00 at the Napa Parts store and they usually are in stock if not there sold out, (I wonder why?)

This sounds like the problem as I tried your test and it jerked from o to inf with no smooth reading at all.
I'm in the process of locating the part and will repost if it was the culprit. Thanks again for your time! :)
