1990 4Runner - REAR WINDOW BEEPING

A couple weeks ago my dad, in an attempt to roll up the window without being able to read any of the buttons and being unfamiliar with the buttons/controls inside the vehicle, pressed every button that he could find inside the vehicle. We haven't been able to roll up the window since - and now it beeps when you try.

Does anyone know of circumstances that the rear window will beep when trying to roll it up (besides having the tailgate down)?

thanks-

Rear window wiper not in it's seat????

Try pulling the fuse for the ECM.

we broke the rear wiper shortly after getting the vehicle, but as long as it was in the right position with the switch OFF, the rear window has always worked. i read somewhere that if it beeps when you try to roll it up, you are doing something when you shouldn't - for example, trying to roll it up with the tailgate down.

since it only quit working after my dad pushed every button he could find, i am hoping that there is some button, lever, switch, etc. that needs to be changed/toggled before the rear window will work again. if i don't find that, i suppose i'll try that fuse...

Ive just been fixing a problem for a friend with their hilux surf which from my understanding is almost the same as the 4runner.
The problem was that when the switch was used or the key on the tail gate turned to raise the tailgate window a beeping sound started but the window didnt go up.

The beeper sounds to indicate that something is not right and it is not safe to raise the window either because one of the following:

Rear window wiper hasnt returned to the resting position fully (reported as most common reason);
Tailgate isnt latched properly;
and in 4runners with the fiber glass canopy their is also a circut to indicate the canopy isnt secured properly.
Their is a problem with the control module or one of the relays in the module.So check the following trying to raise the window after checking each:

check the window wiper is retracted fully into the stop;
check the tailgate is closed properly and give it a good hard close;
check the latches - use a screw driver to fully depress the latches into the closed position when the tailgate is down and then try the window, remebering to release the latches with the handle before closing it. If this fixes the problem then something is preventing the latches closing properly when you close the tailgate;
If you have the fiberglass canopy check all the bolts are in and they are tight.If the beeping is still sounding then their is a fault either with one of the switches on the wiper, tailgate latches or the canopy.

Checking the tailgate switches is the easiest so

open the tailgate
remove the carpet cover on the tailgate
remove the metal plate cover
fully depress both latches in the closed position
put the key in the lock underneath
turn the key if the window doesnt go up then
unplug the one of the tailgate switches by unplugging either the plug on the very left or right of the tailgate
turn the key again, if it works youve found your problem otherwise
reconnect the plug and disconnect the other plug
turn the key again, if it works youve found your problem
otherwise both switches (unlikely) could be faulty disconnect both and turn the key if it goes up then they are both faulty.If this located the problem then you have a faulty switch in one of the latches and you need to either replace the switch inside or the whole latch assembley. It is probably easier for most to get another latch from the wreckers.

However as a qucik fix keep the faulty latch disconnected and now it will only rely on the other latch to be locked to operate the window.

If your problem is not the tailgate latches their are some other threads in the forum that will help.
Cheers
hope this helps

Thank you for the input, but this thread is ancient.
