Transmission Problems

i have a 88 cav with a 2.0 and 3-speed auto. when the car is in second the engine go shuts down and wont restart for a couple of minutes. i tried unhooking the kickdown cable an shiftin manually but it still quits in second but not third or first. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!
