95 shifting problems, PCM or Selenoids?

Ok well i have a 95 aurora and i just started having a problem of where the car would shift from 1st to 2nd, and be stuck in second. If its in drive the 2nd gear doesnt hold the car back, but say im going 40mph and my rpm is at 4k. If i let off the gas my needle will drop to 1k and the gear will not be holding me back. but if i rev it up to 4k it will catch, just like if it was in 2nd gear.
Now i had the car scanned and it said that there was a problem with my PCM, it said it was deffective. And i had Shift codes A and B pop up.
Are 2 things going bad at once, or is one thing throwing off another?
Ugent advice is required as this is my DD
What would you guys recommend i do?
Check the selnoids and see if they are bad, or replace the PCM?

Check the selnoids and see if they are bad, or replace the PCM? Sounds like a shift solenoid pack problem or the harness going to the trans, either way this is not a dyer type repair, it should be scanned by a trans tech with a trans capable scanner to confirm shift solenoid operation and the related codes. Pcm would be last issue in this case usually. BTW, welcome top AF

Tomorrow i am going to look at the solenoid and see if it is broken, i figured it would be the solenoid but my mechanic said computer. He used a snap-on scanner. not sure of the model. BUT i dont want to buy a new pcm and find out it actually was the solenoids, so im checking those first

I would check the solenoids. Your symptoms sound exactly as mine did. They are not hard to replace. I've done the PCM and the solenoids, I prefer working on the transmission than being bent up under the dash. But that's just me.

Thanks, im glad some one was actually able to get what i was trying to discribe, I hope this is the problem.....mainly because its cheaper

The solenoid thing is so common on these early ones I'd be suprised if one didn't have it done.

well i took it to a tranny shop and they drove it. They said that i need a new transmission. The car was slipping in and out of 2nd gear, and when you throw it into neutral while moving the tranny starts jerking the car, then it would be fine.
What do you guys think? Rebuild Transmission for $1800 Or buy a new one.
Where can i find decient deals on our trannys?
Could this actually be a solenoid, ive got the codes it threw, here they are.
Code 29 Shift Solenoid B Ratio Problem
Code 86 Undefined Gear Ratio
Code 94 Shift Solenoid A Ratio Problem
Code 133 Loss of ABS
And Loss of T/C data
What do you all think, what is the best option, and what would you do

Hi,
You have a 95' with an OBD1 computer that has a OBD2 connector. I have had more than one shop scan my '95 and come up with a 'lot' of 'ghost' codes. I think the first guy you talked to was using the wrong scanner.
If you had no choice, I would pay the $1800 for a rebuilt if the car runs strong otherwise. I blew my tranny in Texas on a cross coutry trip from MA to AZ. AAmco said it would be $3,000 so I drove it to AZ and it finally stopped going into OD altogether. Then I forked out the $3,000. If they will stick to the quote of 1800, and they know you have a 4t80e then I would say thats fair money for a job that involves a lot of labor.
Solenoid replacement is easy and relatively cheap though. If your 'fluid' looks good I would try that first. If you do need to rebuild, you wouldn't have to eat the cost of the solenoid kit. The tranny shop probably charges premium for those parts. I think those codes could all be related to the shift solenoids. Kinda reads like you may have an intermitent wheel bearing issue on top of the tranny. That may set off the tcc and abs codes.
Remember A tranny shop is looking for people like us. The 4t80e is a great transmission. If you look through the service manuals, its a technical marvel that was ahead of its time in 1995. The problem is that a few sensors like the torque sensor, tcc sensor, input speed sensor, ext. require that the tranny be dropped and the guts pulled out in a horizontal fashion. A lot of people with tools and mechanical knowledge could follow directions and rebuild the tranny on a bench, but to take it out of the car is a mess. The parts aren't the major cost, its the 20 hrs (or some large number) of labor. In any event, good luck.

I had a 95 do the same thing,replaced the shift solenoids,flushed fluid,filters etc.
Still had codes but they would clear up and invent new problems.
I took all the readings at wiring connector and it was fine.
Finally I changed the PCM and it fixed it.
Then the tranny started acting up again about a month later.
Ive since replaced tranny and its fine now.
Keep in mind that 95s must use a 95-6 trans and a good used one is hard to find.
I was lucky and found a low miles 99 and made it work(no the average shop wont and cant do this).
Make sure you have the right ratio trans or youll have big problems.
I would be leary of an $1800 rebuild as labor is almost that much and the cheapest bench build I ve found is $1200.
No ones doing you a favor by replacing only the worn parts(unless they offer a 3 yr 100K warranty like the GM remans.)
