he all, i have a 2001 lumina with the 3100sfi in it. the ac-delco website says to use delco platinum 41-979 plugs, but i found a box of 8 on ebay of 41-940's that the description says they will work with my car, i was just wondering if anyone knows anything about the difference it any between them.

The 41-940 is the factory plug for the 3.1-J in Malibu's, Grand Am's and alero's. The 41-979 is the correct plug for you application. GM no longer gives the breakdown on what each number means past what Jeff posted.(they don't want us hot-rodders to know the heat ranges anymore). I would advise against putting a 41-940 in your car. It appears that the electrode reach (the 41-979 is slightly longer) is the biggest difference, but it could be a heat range difference as well.

yeah, ok,thankyou. i was thinking the same. I looked my 2001 up on acdelco.com and it recommends 41-979 as the plug, but i also looked up a 2000 lumina which it says nothing about the 41-979, but recommends here a 41-940. wierd stuff. Both are the same Vin J. but oh, well. is there something different about my motor than the 2000's? but here you go guys, 4.50 a bos of 8, and i emailed about shipping and he said to ship to me would be 3.50, a box of 8 for about the price of a plug and a half in a retail store.

Found out something interesting about your car you might not know...I didn't.

Chevrolet stopped selling the Lumina in dealers in 2000, all 2001 models were produced for fleet orders (mostly rental fleets).

hmmmmm, so this means that my car started its life as a fleet vehicle? that means the dealer must have been lying. oh well

they never come straight out and say it, like mine, they said was a "lease return", which is dealerspeak for rental car...which I suspected but verified when I got the title and the previous owner was Hertz Rental Inc.
