..:My Thread For Any Help I need:..

I need to feel special...lol..kidding. I may need alot of help soon for my comp but no problems now, so I started a thread so I can keep it in one place.

My first question:

The computer can't play sound. It says there is no sound device, and I have the one (outta two) that is enabled. The other one is disabled because it only works for abit (just once) then thats it. The one I have enabled sometimes when I restart my comp, it won't work after that. What I would have to do is turn off my speakers, then I unplug the power, reboot then after a minute or two replug the power, hook the speakers back up and it works! Recently I had to restart my comp and I did what I usually do, but now it don't work, I keep trying but nothing. So what I need is a way to permanently keep it working all the time. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

p.s. If more info is needed, just say so.

I think this is what your asking for:

Dell Dimension 2400 Series
Intel(R)
Celeron(R) CPU 2.20GHz
2.19 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack2

Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device-the one I disable, because it hardly works.
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio-the one that is enabled.

If you needed somthing else, be more specific so I know what to look up.

Dell

Well that's your problem right there :p

Have you got the motherboard driver cd and tried reinstalling the onboard audio drivers?

If I can find the CD, I'll try that and get back to you.

Adjusted all volume controls? Working speakers? Correct plug out of 3 on the motherboard?

If you double click on SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio in device manager, what does it say under Device Status?

I can't adjust the speaker volume as it says no Sound Device.
Speakers work. Correct Plug, yes.

I double-clicked it and it says "This Device Is Working Properly."

and I can't find the CD for the motherboard. :frown:

If there is no sound device, but device manager reports it as working properly, open it in Device Manager again, right click and go to Properties again. Click Uninstall and remove it. Reboot your system and it should reinstall. See if the Windows Volume Control reports a sound device then.

Ok, that worked. Thanks.

My newest question is how do I figure out what kind of memory card do I need to buy for my comp? I need to upgrade,

memory card as in RAM? First, you need to find out what kind of ram your motherboard takes--either DDR or SD (most popular types). I'm a student at a school that uses mostly dells, and all the newer ones have DDR...so yours is probably DDR.

So all I need to know is it's DDR and I can get it no prob?
Nothing more is needed?

No, that is bullshit, ignore that poster.

The best way is to open up your case, pop out your existing RAM chip and put it in a static proof bag. Take it to the computer store and they can match it.

Alright. Since I plan on doing this today...later, if they ask to install it. Do I say yes or is it better to do it myself?

do it yourself. i mean unless you like gettin raped with installation costs. i think all you have to do is plug it into the slot that you took it out of. but don't take my word for it. there are much smarter people on here when it comes to that.

Installing RAM is pretty basic. To eject the current chip you have, you will probably have to push down on the sides of two small clips, just make sure those clips are pressed down on both RAM slots you intend to use - reinstalling the original chip and installing the new chip the computer store sold you.

When handling it, try to touch only the edges (ie. don't hold it across the flat bit). Just make sure you have it in the right way (it will only go in one way DO NOT FORCE IT), and press down firmly to seat it in place. Be gentle but firm and you should hear an audible click as it slots in. and the clips at the side will be firmly holding it in place.

Boot your PC and you should see more RAM than before.

Easy peasy.

Time for another question:

My comp just finished updating the Norton Anti-Virus software and now I'm suppose to restart it. Problem is I can't restart it at all. I've even tried to turn it off. How do I restart it and what would make it not reboot? :frown:

Sometimes if a service crashes after you request a reboot, everything else queued to be killed before Windows shuts down and the whole lot hangs.

To make it restart, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open Task Manager, then select Shut Down drop down menu, then Restart. If it doesn't restart, go to the Processes tab and start ending the processes one by one.

As for why this happens - Norton Antivirus is a notoriously buggy, unstable bad written piece of software. I recommend you ditch it entirely and get yourself a copy of NOD32, which consumes about 10% of the resources of Norton and is stable, easy to use and highly effective.

Hope this helps. :)

I didn't need to know that Norton was bad. Sh*t!
Alright, I'll try them things out.

Wait a minute, OZ, with due respect, the 2400 comes standard with 128 RAM, can up to 258, 512, or maybe even 1G. Plug and play.

My 2400 was factory with 128, I upped to 258 out of factory, which is still too low, but the system spc.'s will show the SDR SSDR, etc etc of the RAM chip it was shipped with.

Oops, my apol., saw new posts just after posted above. But, still, whatever, LOL
