Double Clutching the launch? Read inside...

Hey all... quick question...
Does double clutching your launch help at all?
Let me try to explain what I mean...
Last night I was in a hurry to get home, got stuck at a red light even tho I was the only car at the intersection, after a min or two I got impaitent, and started watching the light to my right to see when it would turn red...
When it turned yellow, I started getting ready to go, Just as the light to my right turned red, I started to let the clutch out and gave it a little gas to go, my light was still red, so I pushed the clutch back in, and once my light turned green, I floored it and dumped the clutch
This all happened real quick, I let the clutch out, saw the light was still red, and by the time I pushed the clutch back in, my light turned green and I dropped the clutch again... I was moving forward a bit before I dropped it the second time...
My tires chirped, and I got the best take off I have ever had... didn't bog at all, didn't sit there and spin, just took off...
Does this make any sense? I know its probably really hard on the clutch, but It seemed to help...

"not double clutching like you should..." < fast and furious
Well, i dont have a clutch. But only time i can see double clutching would be useful is when you're driving a 54 Bluebird School Bus. I say that cause my mother used to be a school bus driver and said how she had to double clutch every gear just to keep the diesel from loosing RPM so it didnt bog out. Of course this is a Bus, you're in a Z car.... i dont see what it could hurt?
I garuantee nothing.

I don't mean double clutch the shifting... just the launch :p
Usually when I take off the car jumps forward, bogs, then gets a burst of speed when the turbo spools up... Last night it didn't bog at all, it just went fast :)
*shrugs* I heard of some of the AWD DSM guys using something like this to get good launches... another guy on here who had a 2.5 Imprezza posted something about doing something similar to keep the engine from bogging...

there is absolutly no need to double clutch wile upshifting.......god knows how many times i have heard this theory after that fast and the furious movie came out( garbage ). the act of pushing the clutch in twice should not have done anything. you probly got lucky and got the rpms, clutch and hit the gas all at the perfect place for your car. try and simulate the same contitions or mess around with launching in diferent ways than you normally would. good luck.

The reason it seemed to help was because like he said he was rolling a little.
So if you compare that to a stand still it would of course have a better outcome. I wouldn't use it in a race because then you are sopposed to be starting the same time as the opponent so to make a fair comparison of the cars. This would be like red lighting, an unfair advantage.

Just like redneck said, double clutching is normally only for big deisel rigs that will stall unless you clutch gear into neutral, then clutch again into gear.
You will NEVER EVER EVER EVER need to double clutch in a car.

If you were actually doing it at the track just rolling foward wouldn't you end up trigging red on the tree?

correct, theres no faking the sensors that light the tree.
if you start to roll prematurely, you win yourself a nice little Red light.
and you get laughed at... cause you came prematurely har har har.

double clutching, aka rev matching, is the process of pushing the clutch in once, shifting to neutral, releasing the clutch, revving to the needed RPM, and pushing in the clutch and getting into gear. Old cars did this because when shifting up, they needed to turn the engine as fast as the next gear needed so the two gears could match up. Then someone with someone common sense invented synchros, which physcially touch the gear before the gear does, and "syncs" it to speed before mateing. This is why you dont have to double clutch today. But, in extreme downshifting, a heel-toe downshift with revmatching will save your synchros, and in other situations as well.

Ok, I know double clutching does absolutely nothing during the drag race, i'm only talking bout taking off...
I guess you guys are right, I'll just have to find the rpm that wont make me spin, and wont bog the engine...
I wish that guy who had the Imprezza would come here and clear up what he was sayng about this a long time ago... I think his sig had a picture of a drifting Imprezza... don't remember his screen name tho...

Yea, thats him, I sent him a PM... I think he was the guy who was talking about launching this way...
I also heard about some guy who had a really highly modified AWD DSM... He did something with letting the clutch out twice to keep the rpms as high as possible on the launch...

Double clutching will not help your launch. all it does is further complicate the art of the perfect launch. to launch a manual transmission, you depress the clutch, hold your revs at about 3500rpms give or take, and then at the light, pop the clutch out to right where it engages. do not punch the gas or you'll just do a smoky burnout. ideally, you should leave the line with a slight chirp from the tires and feel the front end rise up as the car's weight transfers to the rear wheels. you'll have to adjust your launch rpms accordingly to compensate. as the front end of the car comes down, let the clutch out completely, and lay into the gas. the art in this is to get the happy medium between bog and spin.
launching is easy to do, but not easy to do well consistently. everything happens in a split second. it can make or break a race.

one thing I have found works best is just GO! don't think about it, you drive a manual trans long enough and you'll get a good feel for everything. and don't be afraid to ride the clutch a little through the beginning of 1st. on some of my better launches I could hear the tires lightly chirping throughout 1st gear.

okay my car has a 50/50 torque split to the front and rear. 165hp/167 ft/lbs is not enough power to break all 4 tires loose. i can rev straight to redline and drop the clutch, and the car will get that quick awd "jump" forward, then bog down. i can slip the clutch out and not bog, but i dont get the "jump". so i came up with this: rev up high and just drop the clutch, then as soon as the clutch is out and the car begins to "jump" i push the clutch back in and aggresively slip it back out again to keep it from bogging. normally my 1000ft times are 1/2 second faster like this. if u talk to "super spec v" on here, he has a wrx and does the same launch method.
as far as tripping the lights at the strip, i like to line up as far back as possible, so i have both the stage and the pre-stage lights lit. most people like to move forward far enough to have only the stage lights lit, called "deep staging". it supposedly gives you an advantage by being closer to the end of the track, even if it is only a foot or so. but i stage as far back as possible, so when i do this i dont trip the lights, and i basically get myself a 5mph rolling start on the other car. :)

See... I knew someone used this kind of a technique :p
So how much hp would it take to break all 4 tires loose? A burnout with smoke streaming from all four tires would be crazy :)

i dunno, a wrx can spin em, but no smoke. one time i put oil all over my tires and smoked em pretty good :p spinning all 4 feels cool, like youre driving on ice.
