Need some advice on the Long-Distance front

Just as the title says, I'm looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with or is currently dealing with a long-distance relationship.
Currently, I live about 2 and a half hours away from my girlfriend, but we go to the same University for 8 Months of the year, so we get to see each other more often than not and usually see one another every couple weeks or so during the summer.
My question comes from my current knowledge that I will be out of the state from the end of August to the middle of December, later this year, while she is still at school (We live and go to school in Illinois). I'll be in Washington D.C. (Capitol Hill, specifically) studying at the Washington Journalism Center and, as a result, won't be able to see her for the duration of the program.
Therefore, I'm looking for thoughts from any of you who have had relationships that had a great deal of distance between you and your partner and how you handled it. Any and all advice is appreciated, just so long as it's serious .

I'll be 100% honest with you dude, I've never had a long distance relationship work out.
Good luck to you though. I remember reading somewhere that you're like 1yr 8months into a relationship?

Yeah, a year and 8 months as of this month. We're both continuing to talk about the separation and I'm confident that we will come out okay, I would just like to know of anything that anyone can suggest that will help the situation, you know?

The only advice I can really offer (I obviously don't have the best track record), it to keep in contact as much as you can, without being overwhelming, if that makes sense.

I agree with Jet Lee just talk to her as often as possible August to December isnt that long of a time.. and just see it as that.. also long distance relationships do work but not for a long period of time (Like 2 years, give or take)

i've been in a long distance relationship for 2 years now except its just the opposite of yours. different schools *5 hours apart*, only see each other during the summer. one thing that i loved was us both having webcams so that you can "see" each other. another thing is definetely talk often, i recommend once a day. talk about how your day went, just anything. maybe try and arrange a special daytrip for you and her to do something if that's a possibility at all. contacting a local flowership by her and arranging a delivery from you i'm guessing would score you major points ;)

Chocolates too. See if they can get chocolates to go with the flowers.
Do that like, every week or two.
Hope she doesn't read this, 'cause it could ruin the surprise, but....
Keep track of EVERY song she mentions(has mentioned) regardless of whether it's one she loves or hates. Put it on a list on your computer or something, but keep track. Then for the next celebration that she is to recieve a present, put ALL those songs onto CD's, in the same order she mentioned them. Talk about a super sweet and unique gift. Trust me, they love it and she'll never forget it.

Network of florists that does international (so I'm guessing interstate) deliveries.
basically, you place an order at one shop and pay for it, and they'll get the shop on the other end to make it up and deliver it.

Long-distance relationships can work. trust me. if you say in contact a lot, talk to them make they feel special, everything like that, it will only make it stronger. long-distance is a test of a relationship, if you can manage that then you're relationship's strong.
don't expect it to be easy, i sleep through the afternoon so i can stay up all night talking, and you know what? i like it, because im talking to the girl i love. and that's all that matters to me.
so make it work, it's the best feeling in the world.

I have a normal sleep schedule...but I do other stuff!
Brian, I agree with you on the whole not working for an extended long period...I think it might just become too hard. When I'm finally with the person I love, I'm never leaving him.
When it's someone you love, no distance matters. You can make it work.

i found out this morning that when a girl asks you to wake her up at 7am she means call and get her up etc..
not put your phone up the your motobike exhausts and rev it.
i thought everyone wanted to wake to the symphony of a 90 degree V-twin with quard-cam desmodromic valve timing. apparently not. she should be pleased i only took it up to 4,000rpm and not the full 13,000.
meh, maybe it's just me...

You know I still went back to sleep? I was late for work...
Anyway, long distance relationships mean $500 phone bills...:) But it won't matter.

Did I tell you that? 'Cause I got it and I'll be damned if that part hasn't come in handy for more than one thing.
I wonder, if Nicole called me then I 3-way'd Chris(for free) and hung up, what would Nicole be paying for; the call to me, to chris, or both?
EDIT-or would they be disconnected when I hung up?
