4WD compared to All wheel drive

Hi,
I'm wondering about All Wheel Drive compared to 4WD.
My 97 has 4WD and a hi-lo range.
Do the newer trucks with All wheel drive have the hi-lo?

No. one range only with full time awd.

Hmm.. I'm pretty sure AWD isn't 4WD though.. AWD only comes on when slipping is sensed

AWD is a drivetrain where all 4 wheels are engaged at all times. It usually involves some sort of torque distributing system to keep power going to the wheels with traction, and limiting power to wheels without. 4WD is a part time system, that should only be used in bad road conditions. Using a 4wd system on dry roads will cause accelerated suspension component and tire wear. Many newer AWD SUV's and trucks have a hi/low range transfer case, where older AWD systems did not.
