i took my truck to dealer for a "pinging" soundand thy wanted to "de-carb" it for $118.00 . anyone know what this is and is it something a average guy can do?----by the way i have used only mobile gas in it since i purchased it in june of last year-i even went up a grade for two tank fulls -still does it

Most likely they are doing a treatment similar to "seafoam". Do a search on this forum (or even a google search) to see more about it.

You do not mention what year but if you have 96-99 Vortec, then the cam retard should also be adjusted to the correct setting.

Seafoam basically cleans the carbon buildup inside the engine.

I own a '96 Xcab Sierra with the 5.7L V8. From the time it was new it had pinging issues. I can't tell you how frustrating it was and how many times I took it back to the dealer. The dealer asked me what kind of fuel I used, and when satisfied that I was using good gas, they changed out injectors four at a time. They did this three different times! The pinging continued and I also noticed that the idle would fluctuate 50 to 100 rpm. It eventually turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. The pinging was especially bad going up freeway on-ramps. After replacing the FPR, it was like driving a completely different truck. So, it may have nothing to do with the gas you're using. Oddly enough, the FPR never set a fault code until the warranty was almost up. Luckily this was one of the last freebies I got from GM.

Sure, low fuel pressure caused a lean mixtrue and that in turned cause some pinging, should not have been hard to find, a fp test would have revealed something as well as fuel trims.
